Does anyone honestly believe the government would waste money on a missile to kill someone in America. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttt! They barely fix the damn roads and bridges here, you think they are going to waste a G or more sending a rocket to kill some nikka or crazy cac down the street? I still think its crazy these "elected" officials are making more than minimum wage to sit up there all day and just talk. No one is voting on shyt..but fukk it lets just talk my nig. We ain't gotta work!

This is just the first step eventually they will do away with the judicial system within the next 10 years @BarNone and judge jury and executioner will be drones. mark my words. 70 percent of the population will be herded into the fema camps and gassed. this is the beginning of a new world order. The reptilians need a docile populace to rule that wont outstrip the earths resources.

Tradition changes, as some of the best written judicial opinions by progressive justices will show you. Those same jurists, senators, and congressmen backed down in 2002-2004. American progressivism has been anti-certain policies (along with certain factions on the right), but recent history shows an overall trend of elected officials acquiesce more and more to the executive branch and giving them more leeway to combat the "war on terror." So if you consider elected officials the embodiment of the progressive "establishment" then no, American progressivism has been anti-military in certain instances but overall they have not positioned themselves as a major hurdle in military actions over the course of the last decade. That's not even to mention that some of the worst military actions put forth by the US have been by "progressive" governments.

Talk and actions are incongruent.
I'm not, I'm speaking in terms of the political thought and philosophy of people like La Follette and later Chomsky, Zinn etc.who have provided or represent the ideological makeup of progressivism.

I don't consider bureaucrats with ties or membership in the Democratic party progressives, or redefining progressivism any more than I consider dikk Cheney a representative of conservatism. They're just part of a kind of bipartisan bureaucratic consensus of aggressive, experimental foreign policy.

During the last few months it has been nice to see the drone issue get more press no matter if its through a filibuster or through the leak of a white house legal brief etc.

This issue was ignored for years by the media and in the rare case it was brought up the administration fell back on "well thats a secret program so we can't talk about it" :mjpls: The more attention it gets the harder it becomes for them to sweep questions about it under the rug.

And to think this comes from an administration whose leader championed transparency during the election cycles.

Funny guy.

So you see no issue with the government already being able to go outside the judicial process to target Americans? How do you think the Civil Rights Movement would have fared if the federal government or even individual police precincts had access to drones? What happens when the next administration decides to expand its powers like every previous admin. has? Suppose the next administration wants to 'win' the war on drugs. Who's to say they can't further redefine the meanings of imminent and threat?

My bad for asking all these questions. Lets just make dumb jokes.

what kind of 'drones' are we talking about here? it was my understanding this was about using drones to kill americans, not spy on them

This policy, yes, but as for the larger social implications, not necessarily. I'm thinking in terms of the well-documented history of technological flow from military to civilian/domestic control contexts, in which it's not just a matter of this or that law, but of what it allows and its potential outcomes. I'm not interested in peddling conspiracies or doomsday scenarios about FEMA camps and forced chip implants, but there are things on the horizon of social control that aren't exactly pleasant.

Its been fascinating watching the response to this from Democratic leaning news reporters. Some of the people going the furthest out of their way to downplay the significance of the debate over the use of executive power and due process were the most vocal critics of the Bush/ Cheney administration.

it seems to be more about using the US military to kill americans. 'drones' are just the one tool for that

surveillance issues also have many 'tools' involved. they definitely don't need an 'unmanned aerial vehicle' to spy on the projects. they can just put cameras everywhere

I think these are bigger issues with the use of military and privacy. concentrating on drones seems to be missing the forest for the trees
