Today, on Chrome's fifth birthday, Google is announcing the rollout of what it's calling Chrome Apps. Don't feel bad if you're confused by the name. Chrome has been serving up web apps since 2010 when the Chrome Web Store opened up alongside the launch of the Chrome OS. Chrome Apps, however, are different than what's been offered before. They comprise Google's bid to elevate the browser into a true app platform — one that it thinks could one day be a legitimate rival to Windows, OS X, and someday iOS and even Android.

The new apps look and behave much like the native apps you find on Windows and OS X. They're built using web technologies, but also with Chrome-specific code that means they won't be able to run on other web browsers — they're truly Chrome apps. A NEW CLASS OF APPSThey can exist outside of your browser window as distinct apps, work offline, and sync across devices and operating systems. They can also access your computer's GPU, storage, camera, ports, and Bluetooth connection. Chrome Apps are, for now, only available through Chrome on Windows or Chrome OS on a Chromebook. Mac users will have to wait another six weeks before their version of Chrome will be updated.

Google will have to win over the enterprise for it to put a dent into Windows. Android/Chrome sucks for AAA gaming, so it almost has no chance there as things stand.

Windows has always won because it has 2 things: the enterprise and games

They might lose a big chunk of gaming if the steambox indeed comes installed with Ubuntu, but the enterprise is tough to penetrate.

:comeon: @ RIP Windows, a bit premature given how wrong you often are about things.

Google APPS??? and Chromebooks are slowly being adopted by schools and small business. Google is pushing chromebooks and tablets. Keep thinking MS have any fight left. MS is done. Google drive is about to make MS office irrelevant

Here’s what you can expect with new Chrome Apps:

Work offline: Keep working or playing, even when you don’t have an internet connection.

More app, less Chrome: No tabs, buttons or text boxes mean you can get into the app without being distracted by the rest of the web.

Connect to the cloud: Access and save the documents, photos and videos on your hard drive as well as on Google Drive and other web services.

Stay up-to-speed: With desktop notifications, you can get reminders, updates and even take action, right from the notification center.

Play nice with your connected devices: Interact with your USB, Bluetooth and other devices connected to your desktop, including digital cameras.

Keep updated automatically: Apps update silently, so you always get all the latest features and security fixes (unless permissions change).

Pick up where you left off: Chrome syncs your apps to any desktop device you sign in to, so you can keep working.

Sleep easier: Chrome apps take advantage of Chrome’s built-in security features such as Sandboxing. They also auto-update to make sure you have all the latest security fixes. No extra software (or worrying) required.

Launch apps directly from your desktop: To make it quicker and easier to get to your favorite apps, we’re also introducing the Chrome App Launcher for Windows, which will appear when you install your first new Chrome App. It lives in your taskbar and launches your apps into their own windows, outside of Chrome, just like your desktop apps. Have lots of apps? Navigate to your favorite apps using the search box.

Nice, but all this does is give MS more ideas/things to steal/adapt for their own products, which will likely never be unseated.
