I know what Girls like, though? It was trash then and it's trash now.

Vol 2 don't have the highs of Vol. 1 but is just a smoother overall listen. Worst track is Paper Chase but that's not even close to as awful as Vol 1s lows. My breakdown would be this
Vol. 1:
Intro - 10
City Is Mine - 6.5
I Know What Girls Like - 1
Imaginary Player - 9.5
Streets Is Watching - 10
Friend or Foe 98 - 8.5
Lucky Me - 6
Sunshine - 7
Who You Wit - 8.5
Face Off - 5.5
Real nikkaz - 7
Rap Game/Crack Game - 8.5
Where I'm From -10
You Must Love Me - 9
Vol 2:
Intro - 9
Hard Knock Life - 8
If I Should Die - 7
Ride or Die - 9
nikka What nikka Who - 9
Money Cash Hoes - 7.5
A Week Ago - 10
Coming of Age - 8.5
Can I Get A - 9
Paper Chase - 6
Reservoir Dogs - 8.5
It's Like That - 9.5
More cohesive, better sequenced, and consistent
it used to feel like I was the only nikka on the face of the earth that liked "Sunshine"
I know what Girls like, though? It was trash then and it's trash now.![]()
Vol.1 is one or two missteps from being classic but "I know what girls like" is hot garbage
I still can't figure out who that song was even for? bytches didn't like it, heads didn't like it
most jay stans don't fukk with it.....who was suppose to rock with that shyt? song shouldn't even exist
the beat isn't bad nor is the rapping it just makes no sense as a song if quest thinks its was something more
to that shyt he needs to break it down cause I really don't see it
After reading this thread
nikkas who don't like 'Lucky Me" got horrible taste that song is a work of art and the beat is
"Lucky Me" is also the only song Jay said he made as "SC"
his Jay-Z persona is nowhere to be found on the track its one of a kind and fukking classic
oh and anybody who thinks vol.3 is more lyrical than vol.1 is smoking crack that opinion is retarded
Jay even admitted he phoned that album in
its a good seven to ten songs on vol.1 thats the best shyt Jay-Z ever put out
replace sunshine and I know what girls like with these two and its classic!
His original title for Vol. 1 was “Heir to the Throne” and was actually titled as that in The Source as anticipated albums before he changed it to Vol. 1 because he didn’t want anybody to think he was being disrespectful after Biggie passed. His album absolutely was highly anticipated by real heads. I never said he was a platinum selling artist out the gate. You’re making two different arguments now. RD was not a successful album in real time, commercially. Jay has admitted this himself on records. So the idea that his second album was heavily anticipated or that people thought he was next up after Biggie is false. Jay clearly thought he was next up, which is why half the album sounds like a Bad Boy imitation. But I’m not buying that he was seen as “that guy” yet.
Album came out and did ok, eventually going plat with no hit records. Jay didn’t become JAY until Hard Knock Life.
Same here. I actually like sunshine. It's the video that gave the song a bad rep. But I know what girls like is horrendous, the city is mine awful. I don't understand why Nas got a bad rep for his beat sélection and jay somehow don't get called out with beats like theses

what is up with you guys claiming Vol 1 is better than Blueprint.. You cannot be serious!!! Blueprint is a damn near flawless album. Even Hola Hovita is better than those shytty wannabe bad boy songs yall praising from Vol 1.I think In My Lifetime Vol. 1 is Jay-Z's second best album
People go on and on about the failed crossover attempts, but that was like 2-3 songs (and I actually liked "Sunshine" a lot). The rest of it was raw.

I mean maybe, but Nas was definitely rapping over weaker production on HHID and Untitled (Id say Streets Disciple but its a double album so im not sure if the weak beats are bad selection or just the filler all double albums end up suffering from). It may have started under false pretense but he sure as hell went on to earn it.Breh, it should be obvious at this point. It was never about Nas's beat selection. That was just a way for people who wanted Nas to work with their favorite producer to cover for saying "this beat sucks because (insert favorite producer) didn't make it". All that hate came during the era of Salaam producing for Nas and then 9th made God's Stepson and it opened the flood gates of people (even so called Nas fans) to argue that Nas had weak beat selection.
That Sunshine beat is disgusting. And not in a good way. Mixed with that wack ass video.. ugh…![]()
