I edited my earlier post to say this about KP:
Yes, KP has better tools than everyone in the history of the league (a perfect shot at 7'3''). If he starts to focus more on 1-on-1 defense (instead of just blocks) and develop the ability to create his own shot (which he's working on), he will likely be better than everyone except Kobe and Jordan (whose defense I don't think he will approach).
What I wanna add that is not in my earlier post is that Jose is to blame for KP's struggles against Tristan last night, not because he didn't pass to him, but because if he had shot the ball more, especially in the 2nd half of the 3rd and through the 4th when the Cavs switched things up to put Tristan on KP, the focus would have shifted from KP and Arron to whoever was going off. Tristan likely would have helped off of KP to stop Jose because defenses panic late and get desperate to stop the hot hand. The defense panicking is why they took Love off of KP and put a more disciplined defender on him that was gonna stay with him. The defense was content to stay focused on KP and on Arron because this strategy was working. KP struggled against Tristan and Arron (who was pretty much trash from the jump) was bricking every time down. But that strategy of focusing on KP and Arron, opened things up for Jose to shoot, but he just refused.
Defenses aren't terrified of 'Melo just because he's a great shooter, but also because they know he's gonna shoot. That game wasn't about needing 'Melo. No, it was about threats not shooting. It doesn't matter how good you are if you won't shoot. Jose shooting would have opened things up, not for Arron to just keep shooting 3's (which he's good at, but kept bricking — even open ones), but it would have opened up the lane for players to drive to the hoop, and the mid-range area for Arron to go to work where he's best. I'm convinced even Shump would have left Arron to help because again, defenses panic when they know they need stops. NY would have been able to move the ball and wreak all kinds of havoc offensively and get the buckets they needed to win the game. All that to say, the loss falls squarely on Jose's shoulders and yes, KP's struggles are partly Jose's fault, just not in the ways he's being accused. Hopefully NY gets rid of him because pg's like him never change.
If it's not obvious, I'm harping on this because I'm still mad about the loss. Gonna be a long 2 days for me.
