I didn't realize how much I was punching in on this one...skip to the guys you care about, I'm just gassed off these wins. It feels like we've turned a corner just in time for a really tough stretch and I'm HYPE.
Short Version: Full discretion, I wound up having to rush out with around 5 mins left in this game. Fisher had just brought in the starters in a blatant "sweep the leg" move and they were closing strong as I stepped out, boxscore suggests that didn't change but I really like focusing on how they close. Anyway, this is my favorite win of the season. The Knicks had tired legs, Miami is a good home team that's playoff bound, they outplayed us thoroughly twice already and we came into their building and SMACKED those fools from start to finish. It was a damn near a zero complaints game for me. The defense was really strong and the offense was impressive considering the opponent and game pace. I can't single out guys because so many played well, so let's just get into it.
Melo: More than 2 points per attempt last night (25 points:9-12), 5 boards (solid) and 4 assists (impressive)...April came early for Melo? This dude really looked mature out there, that's the only word I have. He wasn't getting the calls Wade or even Deng got early, but out of commercial breaks you could see him just talking to the refs instead of showing them up. The Heat, especially Green, were trying to get in his head with harsh play; he just turned that BS into 8 FTAs. The score keepers in Miami jerked him on at least one assist, two more were debatable while I watched. His passing has been phenomenal (shout out Amare's dumbass "doubt it" comment). His defense was really strong again. He looks like superstar Melo from before the injuries and there's no Jason Kidd or Rasheed Wallace to lead, he's doing it himself (with support from others but clearly he's the guy for the first time in his career as a leader).
KP: He was the most blatantly affected by the previous night's game. He wasn't as aggressive on boards and jumpers were all short. He still bottled it up into spurts of wild energy. That third quarter saw him get two blocks in quick succession and drive for what should have been a monstrous dunk (my dude needs to either two hand it or worry about the sore wrist later and stop letting the rock go early on dunks). His play has started to close on the rack more and it got him some FT's that helped his numbers. 12 and 4 with 2 blocks including one that made Wade look like a clown. He got dunked on twice...which really just shows you that he challenges everything and getting dunked on one won't stop that. But to be completely honest, Bosh went right at him and ate him for a while...another hit I'll take, because he'll learn from it.
RoLo: 9-12 for 19 points on a night when AA and KP looked a bit tired and Melo needed help...against Hassan Whiteside! RoLo's footwork actually stood out a lot here and he's legitimately on a roll with that hook (better than Cole Aldrich's at least). The Knicks are giving him the rock with deep post position more often, I've been asking for that all damned year and the impact lately has been blatant. RoLo only had 4 boards, so there's work to be done there. But he had two very nice blocks, including a stuff of Dwade amid him going off with drives early. He also set some violent picks...that's the word I have for it. By the late second, early third guys weren't running into the screens any more and our shooters prospered. GREAT game.
Jose: So Jose still could do with a couple more shots, especially on a night he plays 35 minutes, but his game was good. He outplayed Dragic! 4-5, 1-1 from 3 with 5 boards and a pair of assists. I felt he fell off a bit late in the third, but honestly he's an aging player who was left out there a long time. He's making more effort to get inside, he's not giving up defensively in spite of flaws and you can spot him directing traffic at times which is nice. Good game, but I don't like 35 minutes because I worry about his injury issues.
AA: Couldn't keep up with Wade after his torrid run in ATL, but not a lot of guys could even on rest. 9 points, 2 rebounds on 4-10 shooting. He looked a bit tired out there but he wasn't bad...just not second option "one to follow" "Rebecca's drooling in the post game interview" AA.
Lance Thomas: His only make was a late shot clock forced to take jumper...but he had 3 assists, a couple of boards (one was a legit grab off Whiteside) and he weakside blocked Whiteside badly. So his offense was gone but he gave us contributions to cover this time around. There was a pretty awesome moment where D-Will lost his man and Lance literally push Williams in the right direction than scurried back to his guy...I love seeing ish like that.
D-Will: 5-8 for 13 points...mostly guarded by the statistically scary Justise Winslow. When D-Will is hot, he's REALLY difficult to guard. Here's the thing, he can disappear against a poor defender just as easily (historically...he's on a nice run of games right now where he's strung together good production). But there were 8 rebounds in 18 minutes and that's something a locked in D-will can do; albeit maybe not 8 boards but he can hit the boards and impact the game there off athleticism. Also, if he gets 15 mins or more, he's gonna dunk it at least once.
Galloway: Not the most impressive game from him defensively but not terrible or anything. He only played 13 minutes so his statline is deceivingly solid. 5 pts, 2 ast, 3 reb on 2-3 shooting. He was steady.
Grant: Ugly statline but promising style of play. He was 1-4 but one miss was a last second take and he proved willing to pull up on a defender giving him too much room. He had 2 assists in 8 mins, not bad. One rebound, meh. Defensively he wasn't standing out to me good or bad. I'd like him to eat into Jose's time a bit, to both rest Jose some more and develop Grant's game a bit more.
KOQ: Looked like a guy who hasn't played in a bit. He was late on rotations, jumper was ugly, made the right passing decisions but they weren't crisp. 1-3, 2 points and a TO...I'm pretty certain he grabbed a board that got tallied to someone else but Idk, I usually just assume he's wolfing them. Not a good game at all, but 5 mins after no burn, can't hate much.
Fish: He easily coulda stretched the rotation and no one would complain because guys were tired...but he stuck to the tighter rotation and it was the right decision. I'd have liked more mins to our back-up guards but I get why he kept going back to our starters (they were being reliable). Anyway, enough giving the guy props for doing something fans and pundits have been crying for since I can't remember. Where he deserves his real props is that he's staggering the line-ups well (we wanted it but it was no easy task to set up, especially the KP first half tweak); using TO's to smoke opposing team's momentum and get guys in line; and not being afraid to put a player in when the team needs something. It was a coaching clinic last night with only a couple of decisions I didn't like (but fully understood the logic behind). He's pretty strict about KP's minutes, so he pulled the kid amid a time when his energy finally jumped. I didn't like it, but keeping the rookie fresh is something I'll never complain about. I also would like him to get KP in a bit earlier in the second, because he sits for a bit of a long gap there. Again, it's something I get and don't hate, but just my preference. Overall, IDK what happened, but he's coaching a lot more loosely and looks like he belongs. I was harsh when he did a bad job, I'll be completely happy to eat crow as he does a great job lately.
Random: Dragic looks like he hates the system and his teammates. I LOVED his game before Miami, but he looked pretty terrible last night. He still flashed a nasty drive by on Jose at one point and made some nice passes that guys missed, so I feel it's a chemistry/comfort thing but he's been there too long for that. Winslow is a nice prospect, but in none of the 3 games we've played Miami have I seen a wow factor. I like his game, think he'll be a really solid pro, but he needs so much development that I won't write home about him. He DEFINITELY doesn't warrant Melo trade talk though, if you were on that boat, it looked a lot like the titanic last night fam.
