Probably because that album was actually recorded live and they did studio.overdubs...

Purple Rain got two speed bumps.
Take Me With U and Purple Rain. Both songs are cac-bait. Skip them every time.
Baby, I'm A Star is cool within the context of the movie. Otherwise, I would't listen to it on purpose.

MJ made cac-bait later in his career but everything on Thriller has soul, Beat It included.
Even as milquetoast as The Girl Is Mine is, it's still a smooth groove. The bridge is actually dope.
If you listen to MJ's writing session where composes the music by singing the parts, you can tell it was meant to be funkier.
Even his self produced home demo is more soulful than what came out.
