They could have easily cut him and let him go elsewhere especially when everyone knew they weren’t keeping him at $20+ million.
Then who's your backup?

By doing this move, they’ve essentially created a QB controversy when they didn’t necessarily have to. If Lance struggles, what do you think is going to happen? You can’t have a QB that’s arguably better than your starter and not believe there won’t be issues. Then who's your backup?
It's not just that. If Jimmy was on another team before there'd be no issues. But this is the guy who Trey is supposed to replace. This is like if Packers kept Favre as a backup to Rodgers. This is a festering ground for a qb controversy and once a young qb inevitably struggles the pitchforks will be out. This is something you avoid at ALL costs if you're a team who spent three first rounders on a young qb.By doing this move, they’ve essentially created a QB controversy when they didn’t necessarily have to. They wouldn't restructured unless they knew what they know. All this Juelz typing won't change thatill go along with this choose your adventure and say , well in that case KS and Lynch need to be gone if thats the case.
Edit: They moved up and traded all those picks and hes not ready? They are trying to save because nobody in the fukkin league wanted Jimmy trash ass , just like they are trying to save face with Sermon and Banks still on the team.
That isn’t always the norm though and even you know that. There’s no guarantee that will even happen. Even then, it’s not even close to being the same situation as no one knew at the time that Dak would become what he is now. Trey Lance is still out there looking as fukk sometimes and isn’t ready for that job full time, but they have no choice but to put him out there.Dak didn't have that problem. He took control and made it his job.
Trey doesn't have to be Mahomes just better than Jimmy. As long as he's showing flashes while winning games it's not a problem. They're primarily a running team so lean on that, get Deebo/Kittle the ball, and make plays with your legs. If they're more dynamic on offense it'll keep him out there to work through any issues he'll encounter as a young QB.
Y'all get into a panic so fukking fast it's hilarious. Go back and read when the Deebo trade stuff came out too
Jimmy's contract already fukked us up in terms of cap, at least now we'll get more flexibility and maybe if someone gets injured we can trade him with this new, more team friendly deal that's set to expire next year anyway.
And the way our OLine is looking it's no guarantee either Trey nor Jimmy last the whole damn season so let's just see how this shyt unfolds. I'm eager to see how Trey can deal with a shytty OLine and if he gets hurt and Jimmy starts, then that motherfukker gonna get hurt in 3 weeks times regardless
Miss me with the "uhhh it's so much pressure" shyt. Lance is going to get stupid high expectations because of his draft positions and the assets we gave up anyway so he was going to be under a dumb microscope by fans (and some of the media) no matter what.
Can you think of a single instance in nfl history where a franchise spent multiple picks on a qb in the first round, redshirted this qb and brought back the incumbent qb to be his backup after a year?Compare Jimmy G to Brett Favre
