Games will now start to be built around this new system and new line of thinking, and find ways to put all that extra memory to use, but 6GB of memory dedicated to "other" tasks? 6GB? :beli: There's no way the OS takes up that much memory, not even to stream/recored/encode/decode, since all the things will be handled by dedicated chips, 6GB is just an insane overhead. I'm more inclined to believe the reverse is true. It's not like we're on windows with Photoshop, and Chrome+FF got like 50+ tabs open.

I stand by what I said. but I'm sure they're hard at work trying to figure out creative ways to use that extra memory...

...to nickle-and-dime their customers :jawalrus:

On a PC we are relatively used to turning off unnecessary programs when we are gaming but a console can not expect the consumer to switch off his ustream because Killzone suddenly dropped 10FPS. If the feature set doesn’t work with “everything on max” it doesn’t work period.

With PC games you wouldn't have all that running at once. But a console needs to be able to run all of the os features while the game plays.

Just think there will be the regular OS taking up ram. Then you add ustream, the share button, the ability to stop any game at any time and pick up where you left off, gaikai features, ect. Your gonna need a lot of ram for that. Not to mention the game you are playing will need to use ram for CPU functions as well

I'm thinking they may use some of that as a ram drive for recording/encoding. Doubt they'll want to add overhead to the hard drive reads. Especially if they decide to go with 5400 rpm shyts again.

yep, if they come out with a game that actually uses all that memory, cats are gonna be upset if it doesn't support all the herp-derp social features

they could load the whole game onto it, RAMdisk style. but again, people are gonna be bummed if that sort of thing isn't supported by every game

I saw this and thought I'd share it. It adds a lot of insight and objective information on the subject.

Some highlights

Thoughts?
There are some truths in here, I'll give you that. But at the end of the day, Killzone 4 will look better than Halo 5 and I'll have more 1st party games.
Have fun playing Kameo 2 in 1080p

I swear they're giving the console the 8gb memory because they don't want the ps4 to be an insanely inferior product 5 yrs down the line into its cycle?

Do you know how the vita OS works? It's dynamic. It shrinks while gaming and expands when not gaming. Most of these features are not gonna be ran simultaneously with gaming. Apart from streaming and recording the last 15 minutes of video, everything else that runs the the background is gonna ran off an ARM-like processor that's separate from the APU(think, downloads and installations etc.), although they may still lock away 1 or 2 CPU cores for strictly OS purposes. I'll say again streaming/encoding/decoding 15 mins video does not take up 6GB of memory.

At the end of the day though, all this shyt is just speculation. We don't have enough info to fully understand how the machine operates.

The Vita can do things I cannot because of patents. Its the reason the Vita has cross game chat and I do not. But I found a way around that with my share feature. Which I can only assume will use up more RAM than the alternatives. That could be why they beefed me up to 8gb

One of the biggest selling points was that you will be able to use all these social features seamlessly while playing games. Things like taking control of other people's games or spectating other people's games will be very ram heavy features. If those will be ps4 standard features then ram has to be set aside for them regardless if your using them or not. Plus remember the game will need CPU ram as well. He's not saying the games will only have 2gb of ram to pull from he's saying the gpu will have 2gb. Also unless the gpu has some type of special sauce we are unaware of it probably won't be able to utilize more than 2-3gb of ram anyway.

But like you said it's all speculation at this point. It'll be interesting to see how everything comes together

it seems most people that need more than 2gb gddr5 on PC are running multiple monitors, and/or resolutions higher than 1080p. but again, really utilizing that also takes a lot of processing power (usually in the form of multiple gpu's)

when you see a screenshot of someone running Skyrim with 100+ mods, they usually fail to mention they're getting like 3fps. it's easy to just eat up memory. actually using it effectively is another story

If what you are saying is true, then it really makes you wonder why would sony add another 4gb of RAM out the blue like that :whoo:
They found out something we don't know....
