No offense to Nip. I fukked with him on a personal level and he seemed like a good dude but imo Prodigy's death should have garnered the attention his did this week.

It's weird how popularity works. But it's possible I'm just old and out of the loop. It's also possible that the way he died played a part in the reaction. Eazy E was as important as Tupac was but dying from aids isn't as iconic as dying in a hail of gunfire

its pretty stupid to be honest.
prodigy isnt well known or popular amongst millenials and doesnt have a dime piece celebrity wife like Nip does. thats really the diff

only 90s rappers who would garner a reaction are probably Nas , Dr Dre and Jay
im not sure even outkast or a wu tanger would garner a reaction like that. not even ice cube
knck on wood

That’s interesting. I didn’t really think Nipsey’s death was a “bigger” event until I saw the size of the crowd at the funeral.

Prodigy’s death was clearly the “biggest” death of a rapper in the social media age up to that point.

The fact that Nipsey was murdered and Prodigy died from sickle cell complications is definitely relevant.

I guess what I’m saying is let’s not downplay the immense amount of love that P got across the board after he passed away.

Where’s the music at, did we only get two verses since he passed? The Sean price feature and I can’t even remember the other leaked track.
Everything is tied up with a dispute over his estate. They are trying to work it out is my understanding. I don’t really know much more than that.

RIP P

CIP NIP

I wasn't even a fan that much of Nip music, I was a fan of the man as a general, a leader and businessman in the black community. I look at Nipsey more like a Eazy-E a business man that rapped. But Nipsey IMO was more of a leader, and loved the people more.

Yeah I think its the fact he from the 90s generation and an older head that died natural cause. I was only 25 when he passed but I had been listening to him since I was 11/12 so it hurt me badly but most people my age didn't really realise who he was or the impact. I saw a few people post shook ones clip and that was it, they dont really know the depth of his career and impact. Where as Nipsey was commerical with it, everybody following hip hop prob knew nipsey.
I'm not on Instagram or Twitter, but I remember from this very thread so many social media posts from rappers, athletes and famous people all across the board about P after he passed. He got a big write up in the Washington Post. His funeral made the papers. So many rappers were posting multiple times about his death and what it meant to them. LL for example. The impact from his death was massive.

I agree with you though that Nipsey would have been more well-known to hip hop heads of your generation.

It depends when it happens. If Nas or Jay were to die 30 years from now I could imagine the impact would be less than Prodigy dying in 2017.
Prodigy died at a moment where a sizable percentage of his fan base was still actively using social media.
If Jay or Nas were to be shot to death tomorrow, it would be 100 times bigger than Nipsey.

Why was Pimp C different? He actually died right in the middle of UGK's resurgence.

To be honest, I didn't want to be the one to post this but I had similar thoughts only because, if we're being honest, Nipsey's music/lyrics were pretty average. Rappers in his similar musical mode like SchoolBoyQ, Mozzy, JayRock and even YG made better music and 3 of those guys are flat out better lyrically. Nipsey's biggest draw was his repping his hood/trying to make a positive impact off the mic almost like a Black Panther type mode. In some ways, it's very comparable to where Pac was heading but he, unlike Nipsey also had the music/poetry to go with it.

I think you can make a case that even Prodigy in his later years was more known in the USA/globally than Nipsey was prior to his death. I remember always seeing Euros on instagram with Mobb Deep tats and

The real difference between the two death's is that P died a natural death and Nipsey was murdered. A rapper with even semi-popularity that's murdered will get more media attention especially in the modern social media era.

Exactly.
RIP to Nip and I bought Victory Lap, but his death was about how extraordinary of a person he was outside of music.

P’s death was about his legendary music and talent on the mic.

I also agree that overall P was more well known than Nip, just not to the generation that grew up on Nipsey.
