One thing I heard mentioned on the Daily podcast from the NYT is that foreign aid tends to hurt more than help Haiti

In that the funds typically are misappropriated by the Haitian elites for personal gain. I wonder if aid is also used at times by the government to weaponize gangs against it’s own citizens. They mentioned that at times, it appears that the disfunction is almost encouraged since it keeps the foreign aid pipeline going strong.

I could be misinformed, but thought that it was an interesting take.

Where it seems to hurt is that many of their political leaders are campaigning to gain favor with Washington, Ottawa, Brussels, etc instead of the Haitian people.
