Biden must want to lose at this point. No one in his cabinet is telling them this looks bad?
He could have used that money to do a 1 week gas tax holiday or something.
No, he can't use that money to do a 1-week gas tax holiday, that's not how federal budgets work. The shyt being sent to Ukraine is already paid-for weapons from the Pentagon defense appropriations. It's not cash and even if it was cash, that cash is part of the defense budget and can only be spent on defense shyt. It's a critical aspect of government in this country that the Executive Branch is not allowed to move money around on its own, it can only spend money within the constraints allocated by the legislative branch.
And a gas tax holiday is being considered, but Biden can't do it on his own, it has to be passed by the House and Senate first. Since money is involved it would need 60 senate votes. And Senate Republicans are openly opposing it. This article is from a right-wing site so you can't even accuse them of blaming Republicans:
However, Republicans have argued that suspending the tax will make no difference to inflation. They claim that suspending the tax will be inflationary, since residual savings will be channeled into more spending to raise prices and, thus, overall inflation. Republican Senator John Kennedy (La.) has called the proposal a “gimmick…that’s not going to make any difference” and said that the Senate Republican Conference had dismissed the idea. Senator James Lankford, meanwhile, has said that “a gas tax holiday cannot get through the Senate.”
Others, such as Senator Mitt Romney (R., Utah.), have warned that altering the gas tax could jeopardize public highway infrastructure across the country, including projects under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed by Biden last year.
Senator John Kennedy called the proposal a ‘gimmick…that’s not going to make any difference,’ which Republicans have said would harm infrastructure projects.
