I think the problem with the Untold episode is that it was positioned as being the final and definitive word on the event, and parts of the audience and the production company had two different ideas on what that was supposed to mean. Some people were expecting it to make a larger statement about how race and sports fandom intersect, along with the role the media plays within that. But it feels like the production goal was really more to clear the names of those involved in the fight by giving context on who they are, and what lead up to it. This is definitely less of a case of athletes maybe having too much agency in how their story is told (although if we're being honest, there is something to be said about how an autobiographical work will likely lack external context to truly be definitive), and more a case of mismanaged expectations.

The one thing that I do agree with is that if they knew they were going to run at about an hour or so, the section going into Jermaine O'Neal's life story probably isn't needed. But when you look at it as this really being Jermaine's story more than anything else, it makes sense why it's there.

I'd also argue that the recap of then recent Pacers history probably doesn't need to be as long as it was. Considering that the payoff was just a couple of single lines from Reggie Miller that culminate in them wondering how a cop didn't know who he was. Outside of establishing that these were the two best teams in the East meeting up again after a tough playoff series, it doesn't really return enough on its runtime investment.

Matter of fact, if this was titled instead Untold: 03-04 Pacers, or Untold: Jermaine O'Neal, there's probably less pushback.

In response to both this documentary and Draymond/KD interview, Dan sounded every bit of a bitter former journalist. Complaining that the players were starting to take greater control of their narrative.

During his time in GS, KD had beef with Ethan Strauss and said don't trust him. Yet Dan making it seem like the journalist/reporters are the only credible ones.
Hmm, Dan never comes off as bitter to me about players telling their own stories, he wants seems in support of it, which makes sense as he’s far removed from his sports journalism days. I have however seen lots of current ESPN employees make thinly veiled “jokes” about how these players are putting them out of work these past few weeks - including Bomani and Rachel Nichols

It's hard to tell where Dan lands on it. On one hand, he wants to honor objective Journalism; you can hear it in his commentary when talking about documentaries and the subjects having the editing power.

He also doesn't want to abandon his own "player empowerment" edict and completely slam the idea of players telling their version. He ends up being stuck in the middle with his shoulders shrugged.

That's what i meant. he's usually all on the side of players controlling their content. He has talked highly about things like Player's Tribune (Jeter), Spring Hill (Lebron), or even player hosted podcasts like All The Smoke.

Just seemed like a 180 for him to be making this argument now that journalist were somehow less biased than the players in telling their stories and being concerned with where the trend was going.

i mean, i agree...how draymond and KD spun dray calling KD a bytch and refusing to apologize, while KD already knew he was leaving anyway, into the org failed them is some bullshyt you get away with when "interviewing" with your friend. you can't a have a full player takeover of media if there's not going to be a party to call shenanigans

Agreed.

There's a fine line between something like Untold where Jermaine O'Neal just wanted to clear his reputation while attempting to shoot his teammates some bail, and shyt like that or The Last Dance that can border on straight up propaganda at times.

I think the difficulty for someone like Dan is that the concept of players realizing that they can deliver their public presence direct to the consumer is so new that it's really hard for him to see the differences, and address each instance as what it is separately.

I don’t really think that’s what they did. KD said he thought they handled it poorly but he also said he made the decision that felt right to him. He never said that if handled otherwise he would’ve stayed or suggested that it was the primary reason. And players have typically held each other accountable in interviews they just don’t condemn the other person. KD was on CJ’s podcast and they were openly arguing about his decision to join Golden State.

yeah but we see how the media treated them. Journalist reduced
Themselves to reporting and then criticizing, which undermines objectivity.

players have come to the realization that they better tell thier story. as now, narratives spread farther and faster. And rather not let some middle aged white guy from a nebraskan suburb dictate the narrative of a players behavior.

i think smart and interesting sports analyst/journalist still have a space. Now its shared.
