Kamala and Cory are progressive darlings now?

Ain't no progressives fukking heavy with those two, their natural home is the centrist Dem establishment. They'll have more trouble winning over progressives than the centrists who are already behind them. Both the Obama and Clinton machines are already signalling their preference for those two, along with Eric Holder and Deval Patrick. Cory and Kamala can definitely win over progressives far easier than Biden though.

White working class in those states went to Trump because Hillary didn't even bother making an argument about their declining situation while Trump did. A progressive message can address that concern far more adeptly than the empty anti-Trump civility posturing Biden has been running with.

Actually you're right, Cory and Harris are more centrist, but that makes it even worse. Neither moderates nor progressives really fukk with them, so they wouldn't make great presidential candidates. I could see both as VP though.

I see your point, but I think moderates will have no issue with either of them, especially Kamala.

If we think about what moderates are actually looking for, it's a superficial, stabilizing tone of Americana pablum ("This isn't who we are! This isn't the America that I know!") and an ideological fealty to middle-of-the-road politics. More than anything else, they are wedded to the idea of America being an inherently, structurally good place in danger of being destroyed by extreme polarization. They are animated by a core belief that the proper, wise path is always found in the middle of two ends, which is consequently why they are thoroughly ill-equipped to meaningfully fight back in this era of an increasingly radicalized right-wing movement. It's also why they have problems with progressives harshly critiquing the structural institutions upon which this society is built on. They're afraid of new ideas and want a reversion back to the mean of American socio-political life. While they're fine with destroying Trump, they won't tolerate hatred of Republicans because they're one paycheck or disrupted Republican dinner away from becoming one, and exposing Republicanism as a fundamental, irreconcilable scourge on the nation destroys the parity they crave.

Cory seems to be courting these moderates with his "We'll defeat Trump with love!" message and ridiculous "Sir! Sir!" performances feigning being aghast by his Republican "friends on the other side of the aisle" carrying out Trump's orders. He's seen as a "nice, good guy", and moderates love that shyt. Being "angry" like Bernie is anathema to them. Kamala has a bit more bite to her, but she strikes that morally-faded yet righteously competent tone of the late Obama years that moderates love. I tend to think both are too big to be VP, as they already have the Presidential profile, but I guess I could see it happening a la John Edwards in 2004.

2020 will either be basically someone looking to raise their profile knowing incumbents are hard to beat or someone like Biden or Hillary trying to get one more shot at relevancy

Either way odds say incumbents win outside of economic downturn so it really don't matter who your nominee is ...what will dictate the winner will depend on the economic cycle we are in by election day
