During the American Civil War era, the term Upper South was often used to refer specifically to the Confederate states that did not secede until after the attack on Fort Sumter—Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. This can also include the border states of Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Maryland, or Delaware in the Upper South.[4] Today, although many definitions are still based on Civil War-era politics, the term Upper South is often used for all of the American South north of the Deep South.

Texas is both. It’s culturally Southern and the Western extremities are Southwest. It’s both. Why can’t it be both? Texas is unique.But Texas is the South ?
Confused
I’d even say the Panhandle is in question as to which region it belongs to.Like was stated earlier, not all of it. You’d be hard pressed to consider trans pecos area as Southern. I would also say you would have a hard time saying the rio grande valley area as Southern. Cities like Laredo to McAllen to Brownsville.
I forgot to add the region of West Texas right before you enter the Trans-Pecos and immediately West of Central Texas. That area is a mix of Southern Culture/Southwestern characteristics/culture and general Texan culture.Texas is both. It’s culturally Southern and the Western extremities are Southwest. It’s both. Why can’t it be both? Texas is unique.
I’d even say the Panhandle is in question as to which region it belongs to.
Trans-Pecos=Southwest
Rio Grand/South Texas=Tejanoland/Southwest
Panhandle=Weird amalgamation of Lower Midwest/GreatPlains/Southwest.
Central Texas=Great Plains/Culturally Southern/Fronteir West
East Texas(from North to South)=Unequivocally, indisputably, undeniable Southern. Just different versions of Southern. Northeast Texas being closely linked to the delta South. Southeast Texas more gulf coastal southern culture.
Perfect. Further shows that Texas is a transition state.Texas is both. It’s culturally Southern and the Western extremities are Southwest. It’s both. Why can’t it be both? Texas is unique.

It’s too big to just be in one region.Perfect. Further shows that Texas is a transition state.
