They was like that when they went in. A lot of them burn bridges with family and people that legit try to help them.
that's pretty much a trademark start to any sort of mental health crisis. isolating yourself and mentally deteriorating is a telltale sign of all sorts of issues - properly recognizing that, addressing it, and continuing to follow up on those suffering or even showing signs is a big problem outside of the military. people don't see legitimate professionals. they self prescribe with all manner of placebos and crutches which often only serve to make matters worse or lead to other, more problematic issues.... and they can say that those problems won't be held against you regarding your progression, job security, or lead to your peers treating you differently but its never going to be completely true.

you put a high amount of mental stress on anyone in an unfamiliar environment you're gonna see people develop issues. that's not even getting into all of the other stuff people may encounter.

so those dudes on the side of the street "doing it to themselves" is just another jacked up stereotype. some people actually just go through some shyt

It wasn't my thread, it was somebody else and he was on some other shyt. That part about it being a cheat code and the fact that you put "service" in quotes is kinda what I'm getting at. To be a civilian, especially a black one, you gotta bust your ass for everything you get but give a few years of military service and free shyt and opportunities are just thrown at you. It just shouldn't be that way IMO. Congress can find the money to increase military spending but when you start talking social programs and incentives that could actually help people find alternative routes to success so they don't feel like they NEED the military-- you're going to far

I get what you saying but the military is not all flowers and rainbows and easy peezy. There still is a level of sacrifice. I done seen marriages and families destroyed because one spouse never was home do to deployments and a lot of other commitments. I’m the military you do have to bust your ass. A lot of people “fail” out of the military.

But I agree America should invest more into social programs and incentives for public service jobs.

I was explicitly told, by my recruiter years back, that life is easier in the military if you come in with no kids or a wife/gf just for that reason.

Asking after appreciated that was bushed. I'm not critiquing anyone's decision to join :whoa: Just questioning the value our country puts on military service vs the general public.

When it comes to combat vets, I'd definitely agree they're under appreciated in terms of all the health services they need. From the outside looking in though... for general vets at least, it just feels crazy out here. On top of all the money earned, free money for school, benefits for cars and homes, etc. vets come out to specialized programs in the private sector specifically for them, special job fairs, special loans and discounts, etc, etc. My pops was in the Air Force, that muhfukka didn't see no damn combat :heh: He as an airplane mechanic or a fuel specialist or something-- but he's still reaping benefits from it more than 30 years later.

Meanwhile as a citizen, two of the biggest topics over the years have been the housing bubble and student loan crises. Getting benefits is seen as being a moocher, you're taking a hit on student loans if you can't earn scholarships and grants, sub prime loans, etc. 4 years of college vs 4 years of service is drastically different in terms of what it can actually provide you in the long run-- but citizens make that possible with taxes-- and then we "thank you for your service" and protecting our freedom to be in debt :dead:

If any of this comes off as hating then I guess I kinda am :manny: my pops talked me out of joining when I graduated and I never thought much of it after but these days, I come across so many dope opportunities I can't take part in cuz I'm not a vet :upsetfavre: It's still respect but sometimes it comes off like a separate class of citizens. America has Vets/Police/Citizens/Felons imo, in that order. There's a lot of shyt I don't understand about that life though, so I'm all ears :ehh:
Underappreciated. We should get automatic free healthcare when we get out in my honest opinion. If they ever did that then I could say that the service members are appreciated. I mostt likely developed some kind of cancer while I was in :francis:. All that radiation from the radars and supervisors making us paint without respirators to "save time".

it's over appreciated

i didn't ask any of these dudes in the military to go off and fight in the middle east. whatever they're doing over there isn't "protecting my freedom" or whatever bullshyt ass lie republicans like to go with

i respect a soldier, but i don't owe them a fukkin thing

I've lived in 2 military towns so it's heavy appreciation from the common person. They will suck the military's dikk something serious and you better not say nothing about it. They stay with the discounts on everything round here.
BUT anybody who says that this country truly appreciates anyone in the military has never been to a VA office. Talk to the those guys and see what they have to go through to get what they NEED after their out the service. They are treated like shyt. Plus it's so many with mental health issues and homelessness that get thrown to the wayside.
I feel like a lot of the appreciation is fluff and empty.

Yes it is.

I received my medical scholarship courtesy of the Army.
I wouldn't call it a cheat code. All you get is college :francis:. If you got free healthcare it would be a cheat code :umad:. All my friends from high school already have careers and here I am starting school at the age of 22 because I joined :francis:. I feel old as shyt and these kids are out here talking about "lil mosey" and I have no idea who that is :yeshrug:.

That's not how I mean to make it sound but the bottom line is there's still incentives to recoup that you're just flat out not going to receive as a citizen, sacrifices aside. If you divorce, then that's that. If you wanna go back to school, then you'll need to take on more loans and debt. There's far fewer opportunities to take advantage of, and you could be doing the exact same thing as someone who did it for the military

@Hennessypapi You go into Ranger school yet? I would recommend going through the Q course before doing Ranger training.
I been out since 2016, so hell no:Denzelcrackinup:

To the topic, I feel like its overappreciated. There's a lot of scumbags, rapists, idiots, mouthbreathers, racists, pookie & ray rays, back stabbers, and sociopaths in the military. We are just like everyone else albeit in better shape & more willing to sacrifice.

The thing that seperates a service member from a civilian is the mindset and dedication to a mission. A lot of civilians aren't as mentally strong.

I wouldn't mind seeing more emphasis on the VA

That's a BIG fukkin deal :dahell: med school is like $250k. If your friends didn't earn full scholarships they're paying that shyt back, making it harder to buy a house, etc. You're paying the price of "feeling old" :dead: trust, most would gladly take that over them damn bills. You don't want that life :damn:
