That's the idea, but the cost to bring manufacturing jobs back is much greater for both the company and the customer.
What's portion of this population is prepared to solder motherboards together for minimum wage? Are the companies ready for 500 percent increase to manufacturing cost? Can customers afford the increased cost of goods manufactured here for a living wage?
It's cheaper to just pay the tariffs.

My pops who was an accountant, has been grumbling on how Trumps tariff proposal is going to crush a lot of businesses. He used to have to handle tariff payments for his company and talked about how they pass the expense down to the consumer.

On this topic, ts a wash on both sides. With trump what homeboy said is correct.
With harris, traditionally speaking, if she raises tax on the 1%, cost of goods will increase becuase the greedy corp heads and shareholders are going to say it cost now more to make the same thing. When in actuality, they just dont want to get a slight decrease on thier bonuses and dividends

No, it'd make them raise prices.
That's not how taxes work, ceos can't pass income taxes on to customers, claiming some type of increased production cost.

It doesn't work like that in practice. Tariffs should be a proactive rather than reactive policy. We would have to spin up domestic production ability first.
They also underestimate greed. Say the Chinese product is $4 and the American is $7. Tariffs raise the price of the Chinese one to $10. The US company raises its price to $8 to make more profit. At the end of the day, all you do is you pay more.
These conservatives are full of shyt. They complain about every other price control scheme as 'socialism', but not this one.
Trump wants tariffs across the board for all overseas manufacturing.
