surprised too, thought that would be the lead up...but maybe they wanted to subvert expectations.
or
all those teaching scenes was just showing us how despite how he initially felt, he was living life and it was generally good, not bad
It could be a commentary on how some people can go through their whole life and never "get it" despite it being seemingly obvious to those on the outside looking in (ie. us)

This shyt positive as hell the fukk these cacs talking about saying this shyt is average.

Wasn't to sure at the beginning but then it hits at the mid section and brings in a good landing at the end.

So many layered meanings in this also.

People talking about they're surprised that they didn't reveal that his calling was teaching. Wouldn't that destroy the whole message of the film by saying a person has a "calling"

:mjcry:the scene where he playing piano with his pops.

This wasn't no motherfukkin' kids movie. This was a movie for parents who are disappointed with their lives:wow:

I felt like this was the kind of movie the actual artists at Pixar wanted to make for themselves rather than something for the larger movie-going public:jbhmm:

I wasn't expecting it, but this movie had re-evaluating my priorities and sniffing onions at the end:mjcry:

One reveal I'm surprised the film didn't do
I thought the film was going to reveal that Joe's real purpose was teaching. Multiple times the film shows that even though Joe doesn't think much of his teaching job, his students think very highly of him and he has a positive impact on their lives. Also w/ the barber telling him that he went to school for something else, but ended up liking his role as a barber, that would show that would you think is your purpose may not actually be what your purpose is.

Furthermore, Joe is the only one to teach 22 why life is worth experiencing. However at the end of the film when Jerry asks Joe what Joe was gonna do w/ his 2nd/3rd chance at life, Joe says that he doesn't know but he's going to make it worthwhile.

So again, I'm surprised Joe never came to the realization that teaching might be his purpose.
There's another side to this:
The entire point of the film is that it quietly shows him being a great teacher, but at the same time emphasized that it could not be the purpose of his life since you don't need a purpose to live. Looking at his former student and his current student, Joe was clearly a good teacher who had a positive influence in their lives. But even though he does a great job at it, Joe's enjoyment of life could not rly on feeling he had a purpose because then he would have to dedicate his life to that purpose even if it got in the way of living his life.

Think off it like this: the barber's purpose isn't to cut people's hair either, it's just something he ended up doing as a result of the other decisions he made in his life to live it the best way he could. And because of that mindstate he enjoys his job as a barber.

The barber cuts hair because he enjoys the community and getting to know people. He enjoys people. It makes him happy.

I took the movie as saying find joy in what you have. Think of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and how he didn’t realize that the community he has and the people he touched made his life worthwhile.

You may not reach your dreams/goals but it’s okay as long as you enjoy life.

Edit: No purpose is needed because you will find it as long as where you are makes you happy.

I felt this movie was needed in these hard times. The whole scene of lost souls and 22 feeling like shyt, that she didn't belong and didn't even have a reason to live when she actually had a TON of love for life, but she couldn't see it for herself, was fukking amazing. I truly hope this film helps people that are down on themselves or just get drowned on their on thoughts on life and it's purpose.

The Jerry's and Terry had me :dead: :dead:

The randomness and ":manny:" of souls getting their personalities and badges before getting a life was :wow: to me. It just is, we'll see how we handle it once we are here.
