Why Kevin Seraphin may be Knicks' most underrated summer acquisition
The Knicks opted not to make any big splashes during free agency with the signing of a marquee name or two, but ironically enough, their most underrated summer acquisition could very well be in the form of someone who arrived late to the party at a rather fair rate.
Phil Jackson and Co. proved to be patient with the team’s $2.8 million exception, opting not to use it earlier in the offseason. Instead, they waited for other squads to spend money and soon be left with little to offer when it came time to target to quality players, who otherwise flew under the radar, but were still looking to get paid.
With that in mind, in came the Knicks who swooped in and signed Kevin Seraphin to a one year contract. Te Knicks undoubtedly made vast improvements to its front-court, bolstering it so much so that there will surely be competition for minutes. But at 25 years old, Seraphin is hungry enough to fight, prove himself, and subsequently earn his respective worth.
Seraphin’s physicality is something the Knicks stand to benefit from right away. He’s a grinder of defense, someone who likes to push his way inside to fight for rebounds and put the pressure on opposing scorers. He’ll certainly provide an intimidating and imposing presence, which is something New York often lacks. What’s more, there’s plenty of potential in his offensive game as well. He’s a solid passer and has a nice little hook shot that has steadily improved as well. He’s an unselfish player, having not necessarily been featured in the Wizards’ offense too often before. This could help could open things up for the Knicks around the perimeter, should defenders aim to contest Seraphin down in the low post.
Seraphin is unselfish, energetic, hungry, and is filled with potential. He’ll relish the opportunity to play and have a consistent and sometimes notable role in New York, which is something he wasn’t afforded in Washington. What more could a team like the Knicks want in a young player while attempting to change the culture? It certainly won’t hurt that Seraphin will be quick to endear himself to the team’s fan base, already very active on social media.
Seraphin will obviously be playing for his next contract all season long, which could make whatever awaits the two parties on the other side somewhat tricky. But in the meantime, this union seems to be mutually beneficial. Though some of the other players just joining the Knicks come with more notoriety, Seraphin could certainly pay dividends.
