If a game doesn’t have a big name attached to it, it’s a huge risk that AAA publishers aren’t willing to make.

How many new IP has ND released in the last 5 years?

We are 3 years into the new gen and ND hasn’t released a game yet, don’t even have a release window yet, and the Game they are working on is a GAAS of a previously successful IP.

Seems Sonys and ND current situation line up perfectly with the premiss of this thread. No??

Naughty Dog is a developer, not a publisher it’s not up to them to constantly churn out new IP. Sony as a publisher put out tons of successful new IP last gen, which is why they are all getting sequels now.

You think old gears games sold 10 million copies while the new games were out?

The only gears games to release after 2013 was judgment which only sold about a mill and then 4 and 5 came out.

Gears 5 was obviously not the lowest of popularity as it had the largest launch of the series.

There’s no way to get a totally accurate number but it’s clear both games sold between 5-6 and 10 mill. Which would be a success. Not the “bomb” or underperforming you first claimed.

You can mass market gaming all you want, but unlike popular music and blockbuster films, the consumer time spent on a single project/product can be x10 what a person would dedicate to a film or an album.

You can't oversell and get away with it as much as those other entertainment sectors either, because video game consumers on average are going to do more research than say the typical filmgoer or music listener.

They keep overselling mid and wondering why they are losing customers. Only sports gamers can be duped by the mass market scheme cause they typically will only play the sports genre anyway.

I've spent 250 hrs on Witcher 3, 300+ hrs on Elden Ring, 220 hrs on Skyrim etc., like these are the kinds of games you can play for an hour a day after work...damn near a whole year or more. Rarely research new movies and I just use Spotify for music. Only buy classic albums like Thriller or Purple Rain.

Your NPD math is unreliable at best. Too many different variables and assumptions being made.

Answer is Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Astro Bot, Returnal, Death Stranding, Spider-Man, Bloodborne, Detroit Become Human

And they successfully revitalized god of war, a franchise that used to do 5 million lifetime is doing 5 million a week. Sony are hit makers

Again between 2013 and 2022 Gears sold 22 million copies.

The only two mainline games to come out during that time were 4 and 5.

It’s fine if you wanna argue the remaster sold 5-6 mill, but that still leaves 15-16 mill that 4 and 5 sold together while also being on gamepass.

Those are the numbers.
