I think the bigger issue we need to address is getting others to realize that race is a social construct made to impoverish, dehumanize, control and in some cases exterminate certain groups of people. People who are "mixed" and "mulattoes" aren't black. They are a new sub-set of people altogether. In the same way black african/native/european blood is in the veins of virtually all african-americans, they didn't even exist in such number until now.
I think Pharell's intentions are good, but he has rose tinted glasses. I agree that being STUCK in racial rhetoric can hurt the community, but i'd rather talk about it and embrace the differences in cultures (which is really what people usually attribute to "race"), while at the same time fighting inequality against peoples of "color".
Telling us to "get over it" isn't helping when we are seeing our cultures dismantled, our cities being gentrified and taken over by larger legislative bodies and our peers and fellow black folks drawing lines in the sand based off educational/economic backgrounds.
