I made two points:
Pete does not have control over appointing the leadership of the FAA. Potentially because the FAA predates the DOT. Without that sort of control it's hard to really do some of the things you suggest. Broad doesn't mean limitless :manny:

The FAA is a mess. But until they appoint the person (who I assume he wanted to run the agency) and not holdovers from previous years it is what it is. :manny:

Blame Biden. He clearly doesn't care much about this or sees it as problematic as you do. If he did he would have replaced a lot of folks. :manny:
At the end of the day, Buttigieg oversees the FAA and air travel in America. He fukking up. There is no need to defend him.

Look, without knowing the specific policy aims of the Biden administration here it's hard to say whether he's succeeding or not.

For example, Louis DeJoy did all kinds of fukked up shyt with the USPS, but it's hard to describe him as a failure as he carried out exactly what he was put there for.

But that's a different discussion, Pete isn't failing because people he can't hire nor fire aren't succeeding at their job.

Current CIO of the FAA took the role in 2020. :manny:

FAA has a history of not playing well with the wants of the DOT. :manny:

There are clearly systemic issues that need to be fixed.

Maybe congress will have some hearing and perform oversight so we can know.

How are flights being cancelled an overreaction?

The reason the flights were cancelled/delayed was because of NOTAMs being down. NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) basically give the pilots a heads up on anything faulty or off at airports. (Runway closures, a tall crane near the field, etc)

For the controlled airports with ATC actually manning them, I felt that ATC could’ve just verbally relayed to the pilots any relative issues (NOTAMs).

Then you wouldn’t have to cancel / delay flights to controlled/major airports.

The decision to shut everything down so they have time to fix the NOTAMs was an overreaction to me…..but I also get it from a safety & legal standpoint, if just one flight out of thousands had an accident it would’ve looked terrible. I believe it was partly legal CYA (cover your ass) and partly sensible to shutdown all those flights.

The idea that the software for NOTAM is 70 years old is disgraceful. Physical and technical infrastructure in the US is archaic, buttigieg isn’t responsible for yesterday but he’s accountable.

The source of the problem was reportedly a single engineer who made a small mistake with a file transfer.

"The ground stop and FAA systems failures this morning appear to have been the result of a mistake that that occurred during routine scheduled maintenance, according to a senior official briefed on the internal review," reported Margolin. "An engineer 'replaced one file with another,' the official said,

Fire every secretary of transportation equivalent in the world and replace them with twitter specialists cause every country in the world has had major problems with flights. But as we all know that the coli and the twitter specialists would solve every single consequence of the pandemic, there wouldn't even be any consequences:beli:

pete wanted the fukkin job, as a high profile holdover position while he figures out what office to run for next. and he was happy to take our money while he abandoned his post for 3 months, for his test tube baby paternity leave

so he can take the heat and criticism too :yeshrug:he's certainly welcome to resign

Probably a typo. Pretty telling they're system is setup in a way they couldn't kill the deployment and limit impact

It all started in 2020ish when the RRs started implementing PSR. There were hearings.

This is the latest.
In 2021 the UP issued 662 embargoes, in 2022 886. In 2017 they had 27

More hearings and finger waiving. FRA, FAA and the DOT and just toothless tigers.

Wow

What has led to the spike in embargos?

They are going to say it's weather. All the RR tried the best to lower operating cost, the easiest way was to get rid of employees. What they didn't factor in was so many of the remaining employees quitting. They really thought people in their late 50s were going to do twice as much work under stricter conditions, and then now they are having a hard time getting people to stay, even with the giant sign on bonuses.

Notice 3 of the 5 worst companies to work for are RRs and UP is number 1.
