:what: Or maybe his belief was so strong that when he became overwhelmed by doubt he completely lost hope. You know for people that claim to follow the example of Jesus you're sorely lacking in empathy. There are a number of things that could have driven dude to that point. Assuming you know and writing dude off as an idiot is astonishingly dumb.

Because your an atheist i'm sure you've convinced your self you think your know what your talking about, however it's obvious the more you type the more clueless you are about Gods teachings. A so called "pastor" should be able to use the bible and solve his social problems, hence eliminating the need to kill himself. Now its cleare he is false prophet, preaching purity and good morals whilst practicing the opposite. Its clear given his high position in the church if those transgressions were to surface, his image would be tarnished. He killed himself as an ESCAPE, so that he wouldn't have to face the problems he obviously was creating for himself.

WTF, you think he's depressed for no fukking reason? That's white people shyt sorry. If the nikka was depressed, there is a strong chance it was the result of poor choices. Being a man is deciding to stay and FACE the consequences of bad choices, and not simply killing yourself. fukk suicide and those that do it.

We are good for taking something to God or the church, when it would probably be best to take it to a doctor. The pastor understandably relied on and only his faith in God to help him deal with his issues :yeshrug:

A little bit presumptuous. We can't possibly know that depression is a factor here because the impulses and patterns of thinking that govern religious belief are intense enough to cause such a break on their own. It is almost cynical to suggest that the thing he devoted his life to isn't a gravely significant factor here.

Clinical depression is real (regardless of what @Napoleon thinks of the DSM) and unfortunately because of the stigma attached to it and our limited understanding of the brain, it isn't taken seriously enough but part of rectifying this is not being too hasty to prescribe it when it is undiagnosed and there are other important factors at play.

I can understand why it's tempting. Much of the language and themes that deal with cathartic redemption and imminent relationships with god closely mirror
the rhetoric we associate with depression and anxiety. The bible in many places explicitly addresses doubt and problems relating to faith (as the guy expounded upon in his sermon) and how closeness to god waxes and wanes, so while Christians are taught that god never leaves them, there's a tacit understanding that for various reasons they might not always feel that way. If ultimately somebody was unable to reconcile this having placed god at the center of their universe (he says it himself, he's "come too far to turn back") it's not inconceivable that they might react in this way.
CLINICAL depression, i.e. a set of defined symptoms.

if nikkas knew how the koch postulates worked, they'd be second guessing a lot of shyt too. :heh:

There are some definite mental things that go on...but the general malaise that seems to be the result of life not going the way some people want it? Eh...

if he really believes god exists, why isn't his line of thinking valid?

:yeshrug: I can't speak to his interpretation of what he believed God could do for him. From my standpoint, if you really believed God is the creator of all and everything, why not use the resources he's made available around you (professional doctors, modern medicine) to help you with your issue?, as with all things, some people believe things to an extreme.

Atheist here.

This is just a sad story all the way around. It's terrible for his family and friends. Suicide is tragic no matter who does it or what their belief system is.
We don't need to use his death as some card to win points in a "God/No God" argument.

I have no problem doing this SIMPLY because this guy should serve as a wake up call to all these so-called christians out here.

Personally, I have no time for religion, neither am I interested in a dikk measuring theology debate because that shyt doesn't concern me, but some of you clearly don't know shyt about depression.

What do you know about the DSM tho...and criticisms of it?

Have you ever just thumbed through that thing? Its kinda scary how much power that book has.

:heh: The only reason why I feel I know what I'm talking about is because I WAS a Christian. My parents are pastors. When I lost my faith at 17 I was a minister. I used to read the bible, I used to study the bible, I know the bible and regardless of what I believe now that doesn't go away.

Before dude was anything else he was a man (born in sin as you would say) he was fallible, being a pastor does not change that and only the most naive of fools would think that Pastors are somehow more capable of applying the bible to their own personal problems than others. As a Christian you should understand that god does not call the qualified. Look at the kind of people Jesus sought out and surrounded himself with. As a Christian you should not be labouring under the impression that righteousness is a quality inherent in people. You believe that anything a minister or leader is able to impart to their congregation is through the grace of god not their own.

You have no basis upon which to suggest that dude was living in sin and the point is redundant because there is not a single person on this planet regardless of how pious they are that does not sin.You believe that because of the crucifixion you can go to the father through Jesus and be cleansed and attain salvation. That is what the book you believe says and from what you're saying you don't seem to understand that. You're homing in on guilt as the motivation behind the suicide without any evidence, you're asserting that he's a false prophet when you cannot possibly know what kind of relationship he believed he had with god.

I do not know that he was depressed the only thing we know is that he shared his doubts and struggles with his congregation and then he killed himself. That being said your ideas about depression are laughably dumb. If a man's family dies in an accident and they become depressed is that due to poor choices? Life is tough for most, there a million things outside of your control that can bring you down. Being quick to judge and insulting those who fall and fail is completely against the spirit of what Jesus taught.
