People acting like this the best movie they've ever seen before.
The trailer didn't look that compelling to me but people saying it's not really indicative of the movie

just finished watching and this movie was lit! love the film's take on socialism and the thin line that really exists between classes, not necessarily rich and poor, but the privileged and the opportunists. ironically, both families displayed characteristics of each one.

easily top 5 of 2019 and really hope Parasite gets some Oscar recognition (along with The Farewell).

that nip slip of Mrs. Park on the couch though :takedat:

Got my ticket for the master class with Bong Joon-ho at IFFR. :blessed:

Also got a ticket for the black & white screening of Parasite with Q&A so if my jury scheduling doesn't get in the way I get to speak with the gawd twice. :whew:

In 2001, Bong Joon Ho presented his feature debut Barking Dogs Never Bite in Rotterdam. At the time, IFFR picked him out as one of the big talents of Korean cinema. Since then, Bong has more than lived up to expectations, becoming a leading light in global cinema, not just in Korea.

Many of his films (Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother and several shorts) have screened at IFFR but Bong, who combines box-office success with artistic achievement, was never able to return to Rotterdam. Until this year.

The festival is thrilled to present the Masterclass: Bong Joon Ho, in which the director will talk in depth about his career and oeuvre. In addition, Bong will be bringing a special treat: a black-and-white version of his most recent film, Palme d'Or winner Parasite.

Parasite, which interweaves the lives of an extremely wealthy and a rather poor family, is an astonishing mix of genres: comedy, horror, drama and much more. The film was almost unanimously praised as a masterpiece by the critics. Bong, a huge cinema lover, explains his desire to make a black-and-white version of Parasite in part from his love of the black-and-white classics of film history. His presence in Rotterdam will not be a one-way street; while the audience at the masterclass will be able to ask him any question they like, he himself is very curious about the impact Parasite will have in black and white. "I can't wait to listen to Rotterdam audiences after the B/W version is screened", he says.

I must have missed it but did they ever explain why when the rich wife was introduced she was unconscious on the lawn chair and the housekeeper had to snap her out of it?

Also when that college kid described her as “simple” I kept waiting for something that never really happened. Idk I guess I expected her to be a retard or something. Something tells me they fukked up the translation on that word. Should have been naive, not simple. I guess you could argue they’re kind of the same but to me they’re not.

The Master Class at IFFR was awesome. Bong has a lot of humor and throughout the show laid out a lot of his stylistic influences and choices. Moderator overran the clock though so I had to leave at the start of the audience Q&A to make it to one of my jury screenings.

Did catch one audience question about who he will thank first if he wins the Oscar, to which Bong just replied with a smile: '1917 wins the Oscar' and moved on.

Oh, and Bong confirmed the title Parasite refers to all three families (thus also including how the rich leech of the poor).

Also, the 'basement' part was added later because he felt it important to point out that society's lower classes are too consumed with fighting each other and that's why they never become strong enough to overcome the higher class of society.

And asked about the potential of another Hollywood movie (following Okja) Bong said he doesn't know but that he is deeply intrigued by people who vote for Donald Trump. :deadrose:

Once the vid becomes available I'll post it, those 90 minutes plus overtime flew by.

Parasite (black & white version) won the audience award at IFFR of a single screening. They basically handed Bong €10,000 for a six month old re-release. :laff:

Just finished watching this, definitely one of the best movies I've seen recently :ehh:

I'm glad I was able to avoid knowing too much about the film, aside from the fact that it dealt with class in some manner. Seeing how everything unfolded between the two families :ohhh: and some of the :lolbron::mjlol: moments throughout.

C/S on the similarities between this and Shoplifters.
