Interesting Business Insider article on the Patriots' decision to trade Jamie Collins.

"[T]he decision to trade Collins seems to go beyond just financial differences of opinion. Collins' production was down slightly this year (though it's worth noting that he's ranked as the ninth-best linebacker on Pro Football Focus). Collins has seen his snap count fall since Week 5, and it plummeted in Week 8 against the Bills, when he played just 62% of defensive snaps — he played 100% of defensive snaps in the first four weeks of the season.

Furthermore, he appeared to be bothering Patriots' coaches by doing what several in the NFL world have called "freelancing" on defense."

Very interesting when you also consider what Collins said about himself and Chandler Jones....

"Collins said something revealing about his preparation when he was asked about watching football:

"I didn't grow up watching football, and I still don't. Me and Chandler Jones have talked about this since I first got up here. I never watched football. I never thought I'd be here, and I'd rather play video games. I don't really want to watch it."

Collins' inclusion of Chandler Jones — whom the Patriots similarly shipped out last year before he became a free agent — is worth noting. For a team that preaches "doing your job," under a head coach who ruthlessly makes sure that players are prepared, not watching football won't fly."

Funny read of the day...

"I got a phone call and it was Bill Belichick. I thought it was a friend or somebody playing with my phone. I actually cussed him out. When he kept saying it was Bill Belichick, I knew he was serious. I started being apologetic because I had cussed the man. Then he told me the Raiders were thinking about trading me. I had to be in Foxborough by 10 p.m. Eastern, or the trade would void. So, I just did everything that I could possibly do to get up there by 10 p.m.

After I got off the phone with him, I was excited. I was hyped. I was in a club that night. Defensive tackle Shaun Rogers who played for the Detroit Lions at the time, was there, so I went up there, high-fiving him, hugging random people. Shaun asked me what was going on and I said to him, "I'm getting ready to be a Patriot." The first thing that came out of his mouth was, "Man, that's cheatin'."

"[T]he Patriots planned to make Collins a part-time player as a result of his poor play against the run this season. Understandably, Collins was frustrated by the development, which likely would have led to locker room issues.

For evidence on both aspects, consider this. The Patriots allowed 3.88 yards per carry with Collins on the sideline vs. 4.09 with him on the field. Additionally, he played just 48 of 70 defensive snaps against the Bills last week.

The Patriots were afraid of the unrest Collins would cause in the locker room had he been turned into a part-time player. He also wasn’t going to get a long-term deal (or even the franchise tag) from the Patriots, knowing how many other players they have to sign in the offseason.

Collins was reportedly relieved to be traded from New England and had been clashing with coaches, according to Rapoport. Now with the Browns, Collins is likely to receive the lucrative deal he sought in New England, which should make him happy."

There is no team even close to the Patriots right now. You only need to lose one to be eliminated in the playoffs, but this team looks head and shoulders above the competition right now.

And, Lewis isn't even back yet.:lolbron:.
