I thought most people in Libya were in fact arab and not berber.

I think it's like Algeria. Most people have at least some Berber heritage. But the vast majority identify as Arab. Speak Arabic. Are culturally Arab.

There is such a thing as a Arabize Berber just as there are Westernized Africans aka African Americans Black British etc. You arguing that Arab and Berber are not flexible ethnicity titles or groups.
One can be a white Berber with Arab ethnic ties and ancestry. Location and people are shaped by immigration and conquests.
That is just the flow human culture and migration. No group is completely devoid of adapting cultural and language shifts from conquest and migration.

I think the general rule of thumb is the more West and South you across North Africa the less Arab ancestry
I think Tunisia is the most White /Arab
Morocco and southern Egypt definitely seems to be the most African

Everyone knows how Africans are treated in some areas of North Africa, and everyone also knows that's it a whole lot of sub-saharean students who go to study in North Africa.
