Georgia Teen Earns 4.7 GPA and Makes History as School's First African-American Male Valedictorian
Young breh going to A&T!
Young breh going to A&T!
4.7
We’ve always had a silent competition with Georgia Tech. A lot of black engineers come from Tech, and we want to be #1. Yea, we’ve got something bubbling at A&T. It’s been apparent since my sophomore year there. That’s the year we were threatened with merging with UNC-Greensboro, and I just remember alumni and the students responded with a hell no. It’s been a good situation ever since.4.7
DAMNED!
With all those AP credits, will he enter college as a Junior or a Senior?
oh, and we need a THREAD about this in TLR. Hats off to this young man, and his family for the way they raised and nurtured him.
We're going to hear about this young man in the future.
NC A&T , this man is a star recruit. Fact that he's from Georgia, will study engineering and selected your school over Georgia Tech is huge.
Some good things going on at A&T, and this is the kind of story to shed national spotlight on the great work your president and trustees have been doing.
yes. and very few make $$$That's a take that I haven't heard before. Why would you say that there are enough law schools, and Black law schools?
Is America producing a glut of attorneys?
Dope shyt. Thought about A&T myself. But I had family in the A and the support came in handy. We’ve always had a silent competition with Georgia Tech. This young man is going into a great environment. I was in the department he’s entering, and they nurtured me and brought out the best. He’s way smarter than me, lol. The engineering department and the Mech Engineering professors will make sure he’s well equipped to do great things once he’s done.
cued to Dr. Thomas addressing the strugglesGuess we should re-visit this thread with the news of Morehouse’s struggles.
Yes, a person from the outside looking in might think that the student is getting a full scholarship FROM the school, but more than likely its a 3rd party foundation paying that student's tuition and fees TO the school.
Perhaps a Howard Alum from Trini set up a fund.
Maybe someone did, but I doubt that. By far most of us aren't on the "loyal alumni" train. Howard has a strong rep for helping alum but that tends to be whoever kisses up most to who on the yard, and we don't need any of that to succeed.
I have family members who are educators and have gone out with women in academia. Perhaps no other profession has the politics, drama, f*ckery, scandals as the education field. I heard similar stories from classmates who had transferred from HBCUs. They said it was like night and day comparison, but I saw that more as going from small school with limited resources to school with one of the largest endowments. You saying it occurred is interesting because NC A&T is by no means a small or struggling school.Glad you pointed this out. Crap like this went on at A&T, as well.
I love my school to death, but I’ll never forget them giving me a 2 day deadline to get some money together to take a class in the summer that I needed to graduate. I begged and pleaded for them to give me a week to get the funds; I would have gotten a check from my job at Best Buy by then, and I would’ve had time to prep my dad for the expense, as well. They said nope, gotta have it by this date. I was able to get the money, and the date wouldn’t have really bothered me, but I knew they were playing favorites with some of the other students, and most of those students happened to be in frats or sororities, or high ranking within certain school organizations. Fellow students who still owed from the previous semester were still allowed to attend, while you giving me this hard deadline.
I know that crap goes on worldwide, but it could be so blatant in black spaces. We don’t need that mess, and it’s a reason I always raise an eyebrow to discussions of money being given to our schools.

Having said that, schools with large endowments and sizeable international student population might have funds set aside for full rides for them. In situations where that's not the case, it is rare for international students to get full scholarships to an American university, funded by that institution.
The current story with Hampton U. taking in and paying for the displaced Bahamian students to attend this year is a GREAT story. I am certain that HU will see an increase in donations and applications from Bahamian Americans in the future.
Thanks..In the context of this discussion, I have to stand by what I wrote about the likelihood of free ride offers to int. students coming from universities with large endowments and /or resources. Howard U. is not currently in that situation. Perhaps they did fund a scholarship for the Trini student mentioned earlier in the thread. More than likely not, and it was from a private party .The politics of education are more grimy than politics itself. I've developed a deep and abiding love for teachers who just genuine;y want to teach without all the extras, because they get overlooked a lot.
This is a little off. There's some history to it.
Trinbago people usually get full academic rides at most schools that know about them; they tend to be sought after. UK and Canadian universities have been throwing money at us since the 70s for full academic scholarships. US universities caught on in the late-80s or so. That changed a little with the '08 downturn. Some of those same US schools wanted to start chiseling the corners on offers...but they really can't deny the grades/SAT scores, so most stopped playing that game because we'd just go to other places that weren't. Our educational system produces results, and it looks good on a university's books with the boost they get for graduation numbers etc...and we're not scared of travel. Another big plus is that between us and the yardies (and the Bajans in UK) we've been in the US/UK/Canada for generations and we stay connected, so we help newcomers to make a way. (The problem comes in with the children of those who have been here that go through US public school systems and don't have the same leg up academically to face university, but that will change as more people wake up to it.) Athletic scholarships are a different beast but it doesn't really matter. We'd sooner go after the academic scholarships even if we play ball or run track or whatever.
If you run into anybody born and raised in Trinbago who didn't get a full ride, they're either not plugged in or they didn't take the time to properly assess their options. Life is always better when you have options.
That came out of nowhere for me, I was impressed and skeptical about it at the same time. It wouldn't surprise me that they have a Bahamian in their admin staff.
