The "hold your own nu campus" line was a joke that wrote itself, and I hope everybody knows that I was kidding.

On a more serious note, instead of merging do you think that contraction of the smaller schools is a better option? Elimination departments,.concentrations , schools?

Also, what do you think can be done to increase interest and enrollment at HBCUs?

A&T, NC Central, and WSSU can hold their own
Yikes. I just reread this, and could see how this could be me coming off as an elitist towards my school, and putting down the many other great HBCUs here in NC. I apologize for my words. I am against elitism in any form, and have expressed that on here, so I gotta check myself on hypocrisy when I display it.

Truth is, I don’t want any HBCU to merge, as the more colleges out there for us, the more opportunity there is for us to get a college education and get that education from individuals who look after us. The issue is, with financial pressures happening to us all, merging might be our best option.

I didn't read that into it. I saw it more as an indicator of how WELL run those institutions are. You can be proud of having great leadership at the helm of your school. Leadership seems to be the biggest difference between these schools succeeding or not.

One point where Yvette Carnell and I hold the same position is in calling out Black leadership for the current conditions for Black people. Elected leadership, selected leadership or self-appointed leadership.......if the people you represent suffer you have to be held accountable. Everybody is not fit to lead.

In fact, that's common ground that most Black people in this country can agree on. Most of the Black immigrants are here because of the FAILURE of leadership back in their home countries.

I came in here to ask that very question. What are these schools doing to increase enrollment? I know Georgia Tech is a premier in Georgia. How do the other HBCUs there compare? If they don't, is there anything being done to improve the quality of those HBCUs?

That's a take that I haven't heard before. Why would you say that there are enough law schools, and Black law schools?
Is America producing a glut of attorneys?
A massive, massive glut of attorneys, and they're maldistributed throughout the US.
Law schools are legit graduating classes w/ 40% employment rates 9 months after graduation.
We need more immigration attorneys and public defenders, we also need more funding in those areas.

We have enough corporate lawyers and GCs.

We also have too many Black students graduating from low-ranked schools without jobs, and of all the HBCU law schools, only Howard has students that can even gain employment to pay off their loans. NCCU and Southern are pitiful.

Increasing interest and enrollment in HBCUs is pretty easy: actually recruit students and push current students to achieve acclaim.

You'd be surprised at just how pitiful recruitment strategies are for most HBCUs. I went to a PWI w/ 9 other classmates from the best public school in my city, a magnet school that's 90% Black. All because the school put effort into recruiting us.

Funding is a big issue and if HBCUs can't give out generous packages to high-achieving students, they're going to lose the best students to schools that can.
I had like a 3.8 and a 30 ACT in HS (didn't even finish the test) and Howard didn't want to make it rain my way; none of the HBCUs even came to recruit at our school.

HBCUs in states should merge into one accredited university system that allows for revenue sharing and etc, similar to a sports league. That way they can keep their own history and etc, but they'll have a stronger infrastructure and stability to serve students.

Thought this was appropriate for the thread. Many of our HBCUs are in trouble. It’s sad, but I can definitely see a couple more closing in the next 10-15 years

Thanks for information about Bethune Cookman. Sad stuff. As the president of the alumni group pointed out, adminstration and trustees weren't open about the problems. The story paints the same story as the other HBCUs with problems , mainly financial mismanagement.

Any of y’all got kids, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc looking to get into any of the HBCU’s listed, and looking for scholarships, here you go.

Figured I’d post this. While I still ended up with loans that I’ve gotta pay back, I was fortunate enough to have my father pay my first year of school, and receive little scholarships from the YMCA and my grandmothers church to help me out.

I’m apart of the Atlanta A&T alumni chapter, and was instructed to spread the word on this opportunity.

That's interesting because I know someone who recieved a full ride from Howard and was born and raised in Trinidad.

From Howard or to Howard?
International students almost never get full-rides to any US school, but a lot of programmes help international students go to US schools.
