Kendrick as one of the biggest hip-hop artists is pop and a crossover artist that's why he collaborates with artists like Rihanna, Imagine Dragons, U2, Taylor Swift, Sia, Adam Levine, Dido, The Weeknd, Maroon 5, and Beyonce and is on the cover of magazines like Rolling Stone. All those artists I mentioned have roots in other genres like R&B, country, rock, etc. how come they can be pop but rappers can't?
Prior to this last album, I didn't see Kendrick attempting to cross over with his own music. And of course rappers can be pop, look at drake, Flo Rida, pitbull.
And collaborating with a pop artist doesn't make you a pop artist the same way that collaborating with Ronald Isley didn't make Kendrick a soul singer.
With Damn Kendrick made it a lot more pop and accessible than Pimp, which is why we saw him borrow from popular culture. Like using Lil Uzi's flow on several tracks, going to Mike Will for his two lead singles, using dancehall chants, getting Rihanna and U2 features, having a Drake-style formula record.
This I agree with. Damn. was an album where Kendrick deliberately tried to appeal to the broader hip hop audience and even pop with the singing. The U2 feature wasn't pop at all. If you didn't know who U2 was you didn't know they were even on that record.
I must have missed the dancehall chant and is the drake style formula record a reference to the singing?

Nobody would label The LOX as "pop" and they were making songs with pop star Mariah Carey:

Kendrick Lamar is NOT pop just because he's been featured on a couple pop records.

Kendrick Lamar is hiphop.

Diddy was trying to make the lox pop then.

The topic is tired as fukk but I'll play along this once.

Kendrick Lamar has done songs with pop artists. His own shyt isn't pop.

Drake does songs like "One Dance" and "Hotline Bling"....he don't need to do songs with pop artists, he's already pop.

And this ain't got nothing to do with either artist. I remember when Redman said he'd do a song with Vanilla Ice, it don't matter he's still gonna be Redman. For the cheap seats, I seriously doubt he'd really do a song with Vanilla Ice. He's saying who he is, is already solidified so it wouldn't affect him. The same goes for Raewkon....the song with Justin Bieber was a terrible look but I remember people talking about "yeah, I bet Rae tries to cross over on his next record!"

This was his next record:

....which obviously isn't trying to cross over.

My point is, if Kendrick drops "Humble" and "DNA" as his singles....who gives a fukk who he collaborates with? Cats act like he had Taylor Swift on his lead single or some shyt.

Fred.

What makes a record "pop" though...

One Dance and Controlla are dancehall and Afrobeats records. Hotline Bling is R&B. What makes those records pop (not saying they aren't). Pop is not its own genre you can be "pop" regardless of what musical genre you work in.

Humble is a pop rap record it is popular it is the number one song in the country, Sit Down Be Humble is hashtagged by the masses on social media, Kendrick went to a Southern trap producer Mike WiLL Made It known for producing top 40 singles who works with everyone from trap stars to Miley Cyrus, Kendrick used Lil Uzi's flow which is the popular flow of the moment in hip-hop.

I disagree with this, but if this is the argument, at least there is logic behind it :yeshrug:

pop music to me is watered down music for the masses.
It can pull from one genre or a variety :yeshrug:
It isn't a genre, pop is a sphere of music that encompasses popular music that's why "pop" stars can come in any genre.

Why does pop music have to be watered down? Why does it have to be bad? You saying the G.O.A.T. and king of pop Michael Jackson made watered down music? Also, if that's the line of reasoning how is Humble not watered down for the masses? I've been listening to Kendrick since Overly Dedicated this is the definition of K-Dot being dumbed down lyrically and trying to appeal to the masses.

When they weren't Grindin', the Clipse were laying down vocals with Justin Timberlake:

Nobody would label them "pop" either.

Kendrick Lamar is hiphop.

Not the only reason he's called pop though.
Name another rapper that gets to perform on the biggest award shows with songs that didn't even work that well?
Pop nikkas.
Most importantly when you takeover mainstream before the streets, you're pop
