Quarterbacks
Blaine Gabbert - Yes, my friends, I believe Blaine Gabbert will be named the week one starter barring him having an absolutely brutal pre-season this year, he has had lions shares of the snaps in minicamp, due to Colin Kaepernick rehabbing from what seems to be somewhat severe injuries cumulatively. Having watched his games as a 49er, I do like some of the things he can do even though I think he will never be an elite QB. He is an ideal prototype for Chip Kelly's modified WCO. He has a solid arm, tho he doesn't have Kaepernick's rocket, he is a good runner too, even though he he is not fast as Kaep either. What he does do is get the TEs involved more especially Vance McDonald who flourished under him. His success though will depend heavily on the type of offensive line we have though. If he a good season this year, the team will likely look to trade Kaepernick this season or next. He could salvage his career here.
Grade: C+
Colin Kaepernick - Colin Kaepernick went from a borderline top 10 QB to a flaming trash heap, if you let the Monday morning QBs tell it. Despite the fact that he has similar stats to SB losing QB, Cam Newton and with a nowhere the weapons. Kaep was apparent hurt pretty badly which accounts for the bad stats (relatively) because he kept getting sacked by the most incompetent right side of an offensive line in the league. He can work his way back into the starter position but he doesn't have the benefit of the doubt he had in previous years. Chip Kelly has mouthed support of him but if he had his way he's want Gabbert to start. Kaep still is among the leagues fastest QBs, and he has one of the strongest arms, but he struggles with accuracy in the middle of the road throws even so, he's still pretty efficient and has the skills to win back the starting job. We'll go from there.
Grade: C+
Thad Lewis - A career journeymen who came in the league as an undrafted free agent. I remember that one really good game he had against the Patriots, even though I would argue that was more of an indictment of the Pats defense than anything. He's bounced around the league but he'll be the 3rd QB based off experience. He has an average arm, average accuracy and is not especially athletic, but he must have a good grasp of Kelly's offense, and is apparently a high character type guy
Grade: D
Jeff Driskel - A young rookie QB we drafted in the 6th round. He had an impressive senior season at Louisiana tech passing for over 4000 yards and 27 TDs, with that, he seems like a poor man's Blain Gabbert. He has a really nice arm, but he's not athletic and unlike Blaine, he is a brutal passer outside of the pocket. Even in the pocket, he has to learn how to thread his throws a bit more. I believe he is going to be pet project of Chip Kelly. A kid he can coach up to become a primary backup in a couple of years.
Grade: D-
Unit Analysis: The success or failure of this unit depends almost entire on the offensive line we field this year. The Gabbert/Kaepernick battle will be close, but I think if it's close Gabbert will at least start the season and then Kaep if he gets hurt or shyts the bed. Either way, we're are average at this position until proven otherwise.
