You've yet to state what qualities you've seen in Marino that tells you he wouldn't have succeeded being the 49ers qb during that time.

why would I ? :wtf: Ive never said he wouldnt have succeeded. nor did I say he wouldve succeeded. its you who tries the hypotheticals breh. I just mocked you there by changing the names around :manny:

I dont play what ifs. pro football is a tricky sport. top level talent sometimes just doesnt shine through circumstantially. someone like arian foster, marques colston, wes welker, etc. could very well never played a down in the NFL.

therefore I cant rank players off pure talent unless their talent was just overwhelmingly better. NFL is where performance is king. David Boston was a great talent...what happened to him ?

people can talk about pretty spirals, great arms, great leaping abilities all they can but in the end of the day jerry and joe performances in the books is what people will remember. jerry was nowhere the most physically talented WR in the league, prolly not even in his draft class. neither was joe. NFL is where pure talent just doesnt go proportionally with performance like in bball. and even in the NBA you got dudes like Malone, Barkley, Ewing, Stockton etc. without a ring
all of them are considered great. but are any of them considered the BEST ?

btw nothing personal you know I respect your opinion..I just cant agree with it

exactly. Why would you.

I can say Brady wouldn't have succeeded like Joe because Brady gets frigidity when coming straight at him. That's a characteristic flaw at the qb position from Brady. That didnt effect Joe.

I'm still trying to figure out what puts Joe ahead of Dan other than Being in a better situation. I've yet to find it.

again, I dont like putting players b in player a situations and then deducing stuff. its just stupid imo.

some players just dont workout in some situations whn the initial guess is theyd flourish in.

just off the top in recent years, matt schaub was a much better qb when he was asked to pass for 5000 yards then a playaction game manager.

brady did just fine in 2007 passing downfield when mcdaniels blew up with the spread.

peyton playing more of a game manager role this year couldnt do better than his better years on the colts.

favre thrived as more of a game manager with minny.

warner couldnt do shyt in new york.

theres just tons of shyt that works and tons of shyt that doesnt.

and Im sorry but I dont believe you or anyone for that matter can logically argue why all of that happens.

no, youre looking at it wrong.

instead of looking at STUPID TOTALS, look at yards per attempt. all those qbs threw the ball much more than Montana did.

Montana career y/a is 7.5
Favre's career y/a is 7.1
Marino's career y/a is 7.3
Brady career y/a is 7.5
Peyton career y/a is 7.6

where is that outlier you were talking about ? WHERE ?

you think that for a qb to be good he needs to be asked to throw a ton. which is pure bullshyt if you ask me.

i'm just stating facts. Every other QB that you could make a logical "Top 5 ever" argument for has thrown for 4,000 yards and more than 30 TD's multiple times. Every one of those dudes not named Montana has done that.

SMH at arbitrarily picking a stat where Montana is in the same company as a passer as those other guys and treating it like gospel. Cam Newton had a higher y/a than Rodgers, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, etc. this past season. Yet no one in their right mind would tell you that he had a better year than any of them. So I don't see how that's the end all be all of stats.

Basically your argument is that Montana is the GOAT because he was a game manager who played great in big games. Well sorry, but that's just not good enough for him to be considered the GOAT. At least not in my eyes.

Where'd did Marino showcase a lesser than quality than Joe other than being around a lesser than organization.

I think Marino is probably the best pure passer of all time, but his playoff record/stats were very average esp. when you consider he was facing inferior competition in the AFC at the time, not a stretch to think he would have struggled against the beasts in the NFC.

:laff:
my "arbitrary picked stat" is basically the stat you used only divided by the attempt numbers, idiot. but of course youll penalize the QB because he doesnt throw as much because that makes tons of sense huh :mindblown:

and yes, because the NFL is an extreme passing league youve got tons of qbs with godly y/a nowadays.

you guys keep fapping at great spirals and thread the needle throws and cannon arms as much as you can.

the QBs biggest asset will always be decision making.

Montana's numbers indicate he was basically Alex Smith with a better supporting cast :umad:

because y/a isnt the ultimate stat. there are other stats to measure a qb. such as completion %, td/int ratio, ny/a and so on.

but y/a as a stat is FAR SUPERIOR to total yards thrown for

matt stafford in the last two years have thrown for nearly 10000 yards
but his y/a was only 7.1 :ld:

no they don't

montanas pretty much all numbers per attempt are well in line with other elite qbs of his time. stop it.

His struggles had more to do with his team being one dimensional.

I'm still trying t figure it what he didnt bear as a qb for one to think he couldn't have found similar success to Joe if fortunate enough to play for San Fran

"once in for all"
"Montana was alex smith with better players"

:pachaha:

joe was so average that nobody beat him when it mattered.. that 2 minute drill, if joe the goat is on the field u know its a wrap. nobody beat him when it mattered, kinda like Jordan the goat.. nobody beat jordan in the game's biggest stage
and has another QB outshined better qb's in the superbowl... montana has handed elway and marino L's... both top 5 doa. who else has sonned that caliber qb. eli sonned brady twice. :leon:
peyton vs rex grossman :comeon:
brady vs warner, del homme, mcnabb :troll:

True, Marion rarely if ever had the benefit of a great running game, though I wonder how much of that had to with the fact his arm was such a weapon. I mean why run for a 3 yards and a cloud of dust when you got a guy w/a Howitzer under center.

93 AFC Championship Game at home is probably a good example of him coming up short against a fairly average defensive Bills team. Lost in 85 at home (Pats) as well. So he definitely had his shots. As a Bills fan while I always respected Marino, I never feared him in the big moments.
