A lot of those eastcoast MCs were also selling records in the west and midwest. I honestly didn't hear much about him when I was younger.
Public Enemy, Rakim, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane had attention from NYC to LA.
Not sure if that is the reason but having millions more people knowing about you certainly helps.
for one, he doesn't have a legit classic album..great lyricist, but those albums were forgettable
