All the other greats from the 80's and early 90's all got gold or platinum plaque including many of G Raps Juice Crew buddies. I know he doesn't make mainstream type joints but Rakim did?

I wonder what was the issue

rakim had a bunch of classic party jams., particularly on the 1st album. and he did a song with jody whatley.

I think "road to the riches" was g.rap's only single that reasonated on that surface.

Different times and oddly enough 'Gangsta' lyrics were not accepted like that. Songs like Rikers Island were for a small a group of people. No internet etc. If you wasn't from NY some of what he along with old school rappers talked about didnt resonate. 'sweeping key food store for nicks and dimes'.....

I often laugh at my old students who use to clown me about having wild Timbs. Now 15 years later I look at their gram like :stopitslime: I see you playa with them Beef & Brocs on.

Breh, that was the only song Marley produced for that album and it got added last minute

Even G Rap didn't know it was on there until years later when someone mentioned it in an interview :pachaha:

Not sure if this changes the truth in my statement. :patrice:

My point is the music industry sales is like a bell curve. In the beginning rappers didnt sell because so much music was localized. Then blew up with tapes and CDs, Id say 50 was one of the last to enjoy the CD era, we are now back like the golden age in the sense that will be hard to sell music and bootlegging rules (Most of my tapes was bootleg back in the days lol)..... Most of the golden era cats went Gold after the fact. I mean Illmatic took a min to go gold.

Yeah I’m just saying it’s funny that Kool G was so esoteric, even he didn’t know what songs were on his albums

"He didn't go gold/plat" 30ish years ago is kinda meaningless. Hell, the whole certification thing is kinda meaningless. He could've shipped 500k, 1 mill, whatever....if your label doesn't pay for the audit then you don't get your plaque. It's as simple as that.

Rikers Island was a non album single that dropped before Road To The Riches. Then it was tacked onto Wanted Dead or Alive.

There’s a few classic NY albums that never went gold.
