MC Hammer was so big that he was beefing with Michael Jackson for record sales... and this was when Michael was still hitting his prime. I remember the hype over seeing who had the dopest video on MVT when they both debuted "Black or White" and "Too Legit To Quit". That was as big, if not larger, than the 50 Cent vs Kanye shyt.

This is false...."Turn This Mutha Out" and "Let's Get It Started" got play on both shows. I think a couple of his others did too....although his later more overt pop shyt didn't.

I think "It's All Good" did too.

Fred.

All of his videos got a lot of burn in Rap City and Yo! MTV Raps. How you think he was able to get KNOWN? Those were the ONLY OUTLETS at the time. It was once You Can't Touch this was when the rest of MTV decided to play his music to the white dominated viewers. And it was also why a lot of hip hop heads turned their back at MC Hammer because he crossed over and that was the ULTIMATE no-no back in those days. Drake, had he came in 1990 would of been clowned like PM Dawn were or Geromino (Rico Sauve) and those clowns.

:patrice: We’re u there in 89? Do u remember the general consensus?
There’s a reason cacs embraced him..

The reason why he was embraced because the muthafukka could dance his fucckin' ass off. Dude was the hip hop generation of James Brown. The reason why cacs fukked with James Brown in the 1960's were the exact reason their kids fukked with MC Hammer in the early 90's. Dude had still one of the dopest stage shows ever in hip hop. He was doing things next level.

Hammer criticizers in here criticize for the wrong thing about Hammer. Talking bout he was a dancer nshyt..lol

EVERYBODY DANCED IN THE 80's.

Exactly, in the late 80's to early 90's.... everybody was doing crazy dance moves. To criticize MC Hammer was like criticizing Big Daddy Kane does being one of the dopest dancers.... or fukking Kid n Play which got their own iconic dance move. That WAS HIP HOP. MC Hammer at the time was one of the best at it.

its not if people fuhked with him or not. Clearly people did he sold 10 mil nygga. Y'all just create narratives that dont make sense and wasnt true. Nothing Hammer did was exactly Pop. Y'all act like he was PM Dawn. He had more stage presence than everybody.

He won off that. People clown Hammer for dancing but dont clown James Brown or MJ for doing it.

he was a product of the Soul Train era mixed with the Fresh Fest tours Im sure he went to. He took that and put it on stage.

If you're in your 30s, chances are Hammer was your first fav rapper

I was 6-8 during his prime

Low key we were into Vanilla Ice too but that ended quick

Before we knew it though, that era faded

Then 92-93 hit, us 7 yr olds became 10 yr olds and the Chronic dropped and it was a WRAP

:russ: at how accurate this assessment was.

Can vividly remember my younger uncles...aunts...and their friends playin this shyt at the time as a young child...and the tide shiftin as an 8-9 yr old....

This was all day...everyday...on MTV back in the day...followed by....

tumblr_n2e300QjEv1rqd0kpo1_400.gif

a continuous (Death Row) gangsta rap onslaught...:wow:

(Boyz In The Hood...Menace II Society...the infatuation wit gang culture...etc.)

That was the end of Hammer's chapter (Kid N' Play too)...anything considered too bubbly.

Hammer did attempt that last hail Mary tho....:russ:
