At his height his fanbase was us kids and our parents who knew he was made safe music. The teens I knew like my big sister and older cousins couldn’t stand dude
This is spot on. It was safe vanilla rap for the radio. We HATED anything that was on the radio it meant it wasn’t authentic lol. Shyt sounds stupid now but that’s how we rocked.
I was definitely riding with big sis n nem :ehh: if it wasn’t conscious hip hop or gangster shyt it was :scust:

I wouldn't say it was stupid. The mainstream didn't fukk with hip-hop so the feeling was mutual. It's kinda like if someone at school or work obviously don't like you....most people wouldn't care to associate with them. And the few people that did go out of their way to be nice to someone like that would probably be seen as clowns.

Same goes for hip-hop and the mainstream. 99.99% of the shyt back then wasn't getting mainstream radio or video play....going out of your way to gain mainstream acceptance was seen as some sucker shyt.

Absolutely. Remember how we felt when mtv started FINALLY playing mj and Prince. It was like :patrice: not sure I can trust u. Then they started playing rap and acts like Hammer dominated. It wasn’t til Yo mtv raps that is wasn’t straight sucker shyt to be mainstream. And even then..

This is false...."Turn This Mutha Out" and "Let's Get It Started" got play on both shows. I think a couple of his others did too....although his later more overt pop shyt didn't.

I think "It's All Good" did too.

He was a mainstream artist that danced and showed teeth all the time. Real heads laughed at him.

nothing c00nish about Hammer. Black people dance.

The real narrative was he was more accessible musically.

Wanna see c00ns in hip hop? They all pop xannys and drink lean. I'll take guy who entertains over these dumb high nyggas

I dont even think you understand what you are saying in terms of calling Hammer the Black Vanilla Ice when in actuality, Vanilla Ice was the white Hammer. :picard:

its all good lil brother.......White Hammer or Black Vanilla Ice.......dont matter to me.....

i know for a fact that nikka was huge.........huge like we havent seen in a while.......
i guess the last black megastars was MJ and Hammer......

base off this - i just might not even respond to the other thread

no diss
but i really don't think u fully understand what hip-hop is
:snoop:

Because he said he was the :mj:of Hip Hop...when them nikkas was about to have a dance battle? You're going way above and beyond in front of some nikkas that don't really know better. Just because you (we) didn't like Hammer hammin it up doesn't mean he wasn't Hip Hop, him being a pop star (aka, popular) doesn't negate that nor give you the right to question someone's understanding of Hip Hop for making a common sense statement.

Yeah clean that shyt up, breh! lol

Nicca was a promoter at Howard while Hammer was making his rounds breh.

Not to mention, Puff followed suit and picked up where Hammer left off..

Hammer was a clown, yet paved the way for people like Puff to be what he is today.

:gucci:

i aint gots nothing against Hammer
he did what he did & was very sucessful at it
((BUT it just wasnt what we call hip hop))

im not understanding the hammer puff connection
when Hammer was rocking parachute pants with pennie lofters
Puff was turning R&B into HipHop / Soul - with putting Tims & baggy jeans on a quartet R&B group from NC and put nergo leage baseball jerseys & hats with spandex with knee pads on a sultry singer from Yonkers

The general consensus is Hammer had a major stage show and had hit records. He never sampled a pop group. Biggest record You cant touch this is a Super Freak sample. Thats as black as you can get.

He was a better entertainer is how he won. Kane and just about every 80's rap group had dancers. Hammer just up the anti.

Hammer got hate cuz he won. Nobody was in his lane to compete. He stood out. It wasnt about CACS embracing. Blacks loved it too.
