If they wanted Spider-Man to be single and broke they really could've just killed off Mary Jane and Aunt May during Civil War...and have Peter try to put his life back together after the deaths of his loved ones and everybody knowing he is Spider-Man...
But instead they had the literal fukking devil undo any character progression he had...
I much rather see a character progress than to stay the same...
