P? p*ssy?

p*ssy is a homophobic slur? :jbhmm:

"PUTO"

Don't be disingenuous.

Mexico supporters pulled out the “Ehhhh.....Puto!” chant once again in their 1-0 World Cup win over Germany on Sunday, with the homophobic slur audible on the TV broadcast during Manuel Neuer’s goal kicks. The chant is potentially going to earn the Mexican federation another fine from FIFA, which is investigating the Mexico fans’ actions with the aid of their anti-discrimination monitoring system. Hopefully, once the investigation of the fans is through, homophobia will have been eliminated from Russia, which has criminalized “homosexual propaganda,” and also its republic Chechnya, where there are no gay people.

FIFA has already fined Mexico’s federation—which has campaigned to get supporters to change the chant—$160,000 for continued use of “Puto” across the World Cup qualifiers, including all of its home games and road matches against the U.S., Canada, and Panama. “Puto,” which came to international prominence at the 2014 World Cup, has also been heard in other Spanish-speaking countries, Brazil, and MLS games in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York.

The word gets translated to “fakkit” pretty often but should probably be taken more literally to mean something like “man-whore,” and it has homophobic undertones even if supporters of the chant defend it as an innocent insult. In the same way that the English “cocksucker” gets used by not-very-bright people as a catch-all insult for men, “puto” is an allegedly sexuality-neutral word that nevertheless works to reinforce traditional straight, masculine power. Whether or not the intent is there when it’s shouted on goal kicks, “puto” is a symbol of homophobia and a common insult experienced by gay men in Mexico, who I would think generally don’t want to hear it as they’re trying to enjoy and not get beat up at a sporting event.

It only took me a few seconds to find multiple articles on its use in Mexico and that it is, indeed, a homophobic slur. I don't get the outrage over his apologizing.

I used to call my friends "fakkit," even when it had no real reference to homosexuality...once I understood the context, and how juvenile it was, I stopped using the slur.

I was also 12. I got over it. Expanded my vocabulary.

Homophobia wasn't my thing, I'm amazed how people still cling to it. Nowadays, it's almost always a sign of sexual confusion and frustration to me.

That's pretty much the same situation here. It's not hard to stop saying, but toxic masculinity is real.
im latino and ive never heard that puto is a homophobic slur.

Disingenuous? :what:

nikka, I clearly thought it was a different word. I don't know any of the nikkas mentioned besides Cody, English is my native tongue, why the fukk would I think Cody is going around cursing in Spanish as my default thought enough to be disingenuous about some bullshyt like this?

And then following up with that long for nothing response like I needed a history of the use of puto in sports. Clown. :what:

Matter of fact - puto. :pacspit:

Puto is not fakkit, it really isn't. Like a said, maricón/marica is homophobic and most of the time used in a derogatory manner. Puto, specially for mexicans, has a lot of uses/meanings and sexual insult is most likely the least of those uses.

"But it's still an insult that comes from toxic culture"...yeah, that's true. But that's a different conversation that requires context. A bunch of shyt that is said in other countries need context. For example, we use gaijin all the time when it comes to puroresu, and some people use and understand that word as a derogatory term. I've never seen one single person give a flying fukk about it, and that's good because they shouldn't.

Do Mexicans NEED to chant that shyt? No. Do gringos SHOULD use it? I don't really think it matters, at least not to the point of making a big deal out of it.

shyt, if Cody said pendejo he could get in more trouble to be honest. That shyt is a no-no in México if you don't know the person you are saying it to. But for example, pendejo doesn't mean much in countries like Chile, Argentina or Uruguay, it basically mean "(annoying) fukking kid/younger person" over here and it's not really a legit insult.

I always thought puto meant bytch.

Ok then. :patrice:

That is a common use of the word. But I'm not sure americans have an exact word that easily translates puto tbh.

AEW is branded on being inclusive and PC babyfaces and so on. He needs to apologize for the sake of that if nothing else.
