‘Venom’ Sequel in Works With Kelly Marcel Returning to Pen Script (EXCLUSIVE)

Following box office smash “Venom,” Sony Pictures is putting the wheels in motion for a sequel to the antihero adventure. The studio has tapped Kelly Marcel, one of the screenwriters from the first movie, to pen the script.

Sources close to the negotiation tell Variety that, although an exact amount couldn’t be unveiled, Marcel’s deal was a significant one. She will also executive produce the follow-up, which will see Tom Hardy return as the eponymous symbiote. Marcel was also a producer on the first pic.

Sony declined to comment.

“Venom,” hailing from Sony Pictures’ arsenal of Marvel characters, grossed a massive $855 million worldwide. The news comes after the studio recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020. Comic-book enthusiasts put the pieces together to assume that slot was for “Venom 2,” giving it the same release date as its predecessor.

Michelle Williams is expected to rejoin Hardy, as is Woody Harrelson, who will portray Carnage in the sequel. A director has not yet been set, though sources say the studio might look for a new filmmaker as “Venom” helmer Reuben Fleischer will be busy shooting the sequel to Sony’s “Zombieland.” Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will return as producers.

Prior to “Venom,” Marcel was best known for adapting another box office hit, “Fifty Shades of Grey.” She currently has a handful of films in development, including an Elvis Presley biopic and Disney’s “Cruella.”

She is repped by WME, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates and attorney Jason Sloane.

That's what people don't get... After the horrible spiderman 3, we just wanted to see Venom like Venom... And they did all this with a 30 mil budget, when these other comic book movies are doing 150 million and up on theirs, even before marketing costs...

So we have a GREAT actor as Venom, a good starting story, and a wide open lane for BIG BUDGET sequels, tie ins with Spidey's movies, and a real goddamn Carnage for the first time... Played by another GREAT actor

I'm not sure what people wanted/expected

The movie is average. That’s why, I feel, most of the complaints are coming from.

The sequel(s) have potential to be better than this movie.

:whoa: I'm going off reports before release

Even in this thread, there's links and articles of them saying $30-40 million production budget... I'm not sure if 100 million is including the advertising budget, or people fukked up, or they gave them more money.... but that was the big question from day 1... how are they gonna pull this off with $30 million dollars

It's not. Deadline always states the P&A separate from the production budget. I'm sure the initial desire was to do 30 mill and then, like most productions, it changed. the 100 million budget is probably another reason they didn't make it rated R

Reading from the director, the second one won't be either (R Rated)

Tom Hardy returning for 'Venom 2'

We haven’t seen the last of Tom Hardy‘s Eddie Brock aka Venom.

After starring in 2018’s Venom, Hardy is now officially confirmed to return for the sequel Venom 2. “I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can,” producer Amy Pascal told Fandango. “When you think of Venom, you’ll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters. And once you saw Tom Hardy do this character, that’s all you needed to know.”

While Venom wasn’t, ahem, critically loved, it went on to earn over $855 million worldwide making it a clear success for the studio. Plus the potential for a sequel was teased as early as in the first end credits scene of Venom, when Eddie Brock took up journalism once more to interview an inmate at San Quentin prison: convicted serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson, wearing what might be the world’s worst curly red wig). “When I get out of here — and I will — there’s gonna be carnage,” Kasady promised.

That “carnage” hint is less of an Easter egg and more of a giant neon sign pointing to Harrelson playing the sequel’s big bad Carnage, one of Venom’s biggest villains in the comics. He’s a psychotic serial killer with no moral compass who takes pleasure in the blood and violence he brings after he bonds with a symbiote. Whether or not Harrelson is also returning for the sequel remains to be seen, but at least now we know that Hardy is officially back for Venom 2.

And could he potentially be joined by another Marvel/Sony character as well? Pascal also teased (emphasis on teased) that Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man could show up in Venom 2.

“Everybody would love to see that,” she said. “You never know someday … it might happen. I can say that we’ve had a fantastic partnership and you never know what’s going to happen. We have a lot of stories to tell about Spider-Man, in every facet. We have big plans for Tom Holland to be a part of everything.”

When asked to clarify on that “everything,” Pascal laughed. “Every movie we ever do!” Pascal added. “He needs to be in every movie that I ever work on!”

So that’s not actually revealing anything but it’s good to know that Sony and Marvel are open to the idea of having Hardy and Holland share the screen together. That might be enough to wash 2007’s Spider-Man 3 from our collective memory.
