We need to learn from what happened when Coach Dean Smith left; he set it up so that there was no choice but to go to Bill Guthridge, and we did good but recruiting suffered because everyone knew he wasn't gonna be there long term. Then when it was time for Gut to step down, everyone banked on Roy coming home, but he didn't, and we wound up with Matt Doherty, who was not ready to lead a program like UNC, even though he was an alum. We are going to need someone who can hit the ground running, not a stopgap.
