I’m more surprised by how much Kosinski managed to nail the essence of the original and trump it altogether more so than it’s box office success. Cruise is that dude, and the time between both entries has spanned generations.
The amount of elderly vets I had seen walking into the theater on opening night was crazy. Was pretty exhilarating to see and kinda hit me like a brick being in service and all. Had their throwback Naval Aviator caps, jackets on and everything. One of them in the most aged, yet innocent sounding voice had asked:
“Is this the theater for Top Gun: Maverick?”
“Yes it is, Sir. Yes it is.”
