for people who have read the novel. is the show on the same track as the novel? or has it strayed into another direction

and what are the differences, if there are any?

Its sticking pretty close to the novel actually.

The book is set in Oklahoma.
Anderson's son isn't dead in the book.
Maitland was killed by a shot to the gut in the book because he wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest on the way to court which was a big deal and got Anderson in trouble.
The Mysterious Hooded Figure doesn't show up as early in the book as in the show.
The dead little boy's father hanged himself from a tree in his backyard in the book.

They showed that he was another accused child murderer.
I would assume that he was "framed" by whatever supernatural force it was that was behind what happened to Jason Bateman's character.
