I thought this movie was great. If you saw other David Lowery movies like A Ghost Story, then you should know that this wasn't going to be your usual fantasy epic. He did make a few changes from the OG poem, but that's to be expected in order to get his point across. The direction/cinematography was piff as well. Dev Patel gave an excellent performance.

I love how Lowery dealt with Gaiwan's existentialism, and what it means to be a great knight.

8.5/10

Just come to grips with the idea that your opinion isn’t gospel breh. It’s questionable at best but that’s your right.

Anyways… I liked this and have been spending a lot of the morning thinking back on it and reading up some stuff about the story, which I’ve never read.

This is a very slow, very deliberately shot movie that feels like one long dream sequence at times. I’m glad I didn’t go in expecting the pace of a full blown action fantasy because I feel like if I did I would’ve been disappointed.

I wouldn’t call it classic but everything doesn’t need to in contention as the greatest film ever made :yeshrug:

Loved The Journey Home sequence and what they showed as a possible outcome for his meeting at the Green Chapel.

Definitely need to give this another viewing as I was having to pee multiple times throughout the movie and missed him getting to the Green Chapel. Got back and they were having a silent contest with one another :mindblown:

Good chances you only were missing minutes of quiet time.

The movie excelled in visual storytelling, and Dev was killing it with the little nuances. Excalibur is still the best Arthurian flick.

I'm still feeling some type of way on how Gawain was a POS...of course that's understandable being that Morgan le Fay (or Morgause) was his mom, but still...he had 0 noble qualities.

So did his mom set him up to die???
I think it was the opposite; she wanted him to accomplish something and become king which is why she gave him the belt (or whatever it was) to keep him from any harm.

He realized running from his end of the game would’ve ended up with him dying anyway (except with a lifetime of cowardice, bad decisions and unhappiness), so he chose to accept his fate. At least that way he will be celebrated for his bravery.

The Green Knight was my favorite character in the entire movie. Kept it real at all times. Gawain probably thought he was about to be let off the hook after he finally showed some toughness, but The Green Knight hit him with the :mjlit:

I could be completely wrong at the same time though.

His mom basically sacrificed her son tho...

Without the belt he dies...with the belt he lives a life of shame

It was strange because her and King Arthur were in cahoots.

Arthur even warned him it was just a game....

Nah, she orchestrated and controlled the Green Knight game so that he could acquire valor and be viewed as an honorable King. The kicker is that he was never really in danger with regards to the Green Knight. The belt was a safety net for his courage. He believed he was invincible, however the true test is if he is courageous enough to face death knowing that he will likely die. Him taking it off at the end means he was finally ready.

But one is left to believe he died, correct?

Another reason I don't think it's a classic.

He was told by every witch he encounters that he is going to return home, and Uncle Arthur told him "it's only a game." So they are already implying that nothing happens to him. It's all a ploy by mom Moran le Fay to create the narrative that young Gawain beheaded the Green Knight, then went off to face the Green Knight 1 year later to honor his pact, only to return home victorious after the second confrontation, therefore he's the greatest man/knight/future king there is. Green Knight was never gonna take off his head, Gawain just had to be brave thinking it was gonna happen.

They should've ended with a swing, chop or sound, instead of the way it did.

This....it felt like a plot hole.

It would be one thing if it wasn't emphasized that he would be returning, which would be strange in itself.

Well in the poem the green knight leaves him with just a scratch on his neck after he takes his belt off to my knowledge

Yup...And Gawain also passes every trial, except the last one of not telling the Lord about the sash his wife gave...which resulted in the nick on the neck. This Gawain failed everything lol

I couldn’t remember if I was misremembering, I was like i thought this guy was supposed to pass all these trials about knightly attributes:russ: since I only read the Wikipedia synopsis. So you think he likely got beheaded because of those failures?
