He was supposed to be gifted anything that Gawain received while in the house, while he was out hunting. He knew of his wife's shenanigans, and was possibly in on them. In the book he received a kiss from the wife, so he gifted the lord a kiss...At least it was only a kiss.

It's true though. Whole movie felt like it was setting up to be this great epic yet that great moment to push it over the edge never happens.
