It's nolan. It's an event film. Pretty much the only director left that can get asses in the seats for original blockbusters not based off IP. Not sure what's hard to grasp.

Not quite true yet. Spielberg, Scorsese, Cameron, Tarantino ...

Please breh. Spielberg has not been must see status since 2005. Stop giving him a pass. QT is on that list for me but the general public had zero interest in hateful 8. Brad and Leo and Margot gave him the stimulus for Hollywood. And I'll give Cameron the benefit of the doubt, but he comes out with movies every 12+ years so he can't be on it

They could easily release this to HBO Max then do a huge re-release in 2021 to theaters.
I’m surprised this hasn’t been the move yet. All these studios gotta realize they’re gonna take a loss, at least make a little something something in the meantime. VOD is another option.

James Cameron
Given a 1 billion budget to make Avatar (his IP) sequels.
Can basically write his own checks in Hollywood.

Tarantino
2019 Hit - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Budget $90–96 million[3]
Box office
This was after Hateful 8.

Scorsese
Need I say more? Still at the top of his game.
Was given a massive budget for The Irishman because he puts bums on seats.

"The Irishman premiered at the 57th New York Film Festival, and had a limited theatrical release on November 1, 2019, followed by digital streaming on Netflix starting on November 27, 2019. It received critical acclaim, with praise for Scorsese's direction and the performances of De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci. The film received numerous accolades; at the 92nd Academy Awards, it received 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Pacino and Pesci, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Additionally, at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, it was nominated for five awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, while it earned 10 nominations at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards, including Best Film."

It should also be noted that these guys are getting older so they will become increasingly less active. That doesn't take away from the fact that all these names headline films and remain a draw even today. Not a "must see" necessarily (as you put it) but a draw that will generate attention and audience figures off their names alone.

What you said has merit if you limit your statement to young (relatively speaking) directors only.

And yes, we are in the age of IP and have been so for most of the last decade (for whatever reason), so there will be a dearth of younger competition for original IP at those elevated blockbuster levels.
