OG’s who were alive during that period, was it realistic for a girl like Mel to even try crack? Especially one who lived in the environment and saw how hard it hit the first wave of users?

Yes...Every dope fiend damn near used to be somebody or was going to be somebody....Teachers, medical professionals, lawyers, Pastors, athletes name it even some of the J's would really make you think...Honestly some have even gotten clean and got back on their feet over time. A lot of the female J's used to be pretty back before they got caught up matter fact that's what turned them on to the lifestyle usually on the party scene inject this went to snort this went to smoke that...

I'm not an OG, but yes. My dad has talked to me extensively about how crack was when it hit NYC. Said that women that were drop dead gorgeous went to shyt when they started messing with it. The biggest prudes were down to let dealers run trains on them to get their next fix. Good people like Mel got swept up and managed to be functioning addicts.

And also how did a ivy league level student figure she was gonna be able to do that at Spellman to begin with
:comeon:
It's better she turned fiend at home rather than on campus and get kicked out. She can withdraw and get clean

People gotta remember, this show is still early in the crack epidemic. It hasn't even reached national news yet. Crack was considered a casual drug like weed or like alcohol. Even smart girls like Mel thought it was just a drug you did to feel good, and that was it. They didn't know how addictive and destructive it really was. There wasn't years and years of examples of how bad the drug really was. There simply was no precedent early on

I think even Franklin had never actually been inside of a "crack house" before. He's two levels above all that, that's why he was shocked at what he saw. Remember, they were arguing about whether Wanda was weak willed. They didn't really understand what it meant to be an addict.

That’s true it’s early but there are still clear early examples of how addictive and destructive crack was (ie Wanda). Hard to believe people just saw it as weed or alcohol unless they were literally first wave users.

It was basically the same way people look at alcoholics and still drink alcohol. They think that they won't wind up like them because they have better self control.

Yeah breh. When I was younger I lived in the same projects my mama grew up in. She used to always point out people to me and my brother and tell us how they used to be before drugs. She did the same thing with dealers too.

Seeing this interview years back really shook me to how deep crack epidemic was.

nvm this video shows that regardless of intellect, all rational thought goes out the window after that first mega blast
