This VH1 documentary Planet Rock from 2011 has really good interviews with rappers (Snoop, RZA, Ice T etc) and former addicts sharing how crack influenced inner cities and hip hop

Glad I kept giving this show a chance after the awful first season.

the second season was excellent and the third was awesome.


I only wish this show was strictly about Franklin. The Telenova Romance bullshyt between Gustavo and Lucille and the invincible Super Cac Teddy Macdonald (who can apparently survive ANY situation with not so much as a prick on the finger) really bog it down. When the series sticks to Franklin ascent its A1 television.

Lol. The acclaim was happening during the time of your post. All the social media swirl caused me and my girl to binge this shyt in 3 days. It also helped when they finally put all the episodes on Hulu.

I’ll admit I didn’t check this show out at first because it just seemed like ANOTHER drug drama. nikkas got tired of that shyt. Luckily it turned out to be really good. But you can’t be mad folks weren’t up on this given the landscape

thats the only thing i dont like about the show and the reason why i cant say its a classic atleast yet...franklin character is just not realistic to me

i get he started out a good kid but he not ruthless enough... and nikkas just be moving out his way letting him do whatever while he make millions in the middle of la in the 80s lol

that and the figuring out cia shyt, other than that i fukks with the show

It wasn’t clicking for me either until I had an epiphany.


They all respect Franklin because of his intelligence. Now I am NOT under ANY circumstances going to attempt to speak for Gang politics and Hierarchy in California during the 80’s.

BUT it seems like TRUE intelligence of the type Franklin possesses would be a valued commodity in the black community during the time. Franklin comes up with all the plans, Franklin figured out how how to get his friends and family REAL money in their pockets BEFORE crack even became part of the equation. Look at what Franklin has done. He got his uncle his own store after years of him being little more than a small time weed handler. He got his aunt a Nightclub after her living a lifetime of being a two bit street whore. He got his two friends their own houses after years of growing up in poverty and squalor. He got his mother a real estate business AND paid off her home after a lifetime of her kowtowing to white men. He’s the son of a poor uneducated mother and a failed alcoholic black panther, and yet he got TWO white men to trust him with running MILLIONS of dollars worth of drugs. Franklin is Black Jesus to these nikkas.

Its not so much about being physically ruthless. nikkas like Jerome, Leon, Kevin, etc. have seen an endless cycle of violence their entire lives. Violence isn’t surprising. Its not unexpected.
What IS unexpected is a nikka who can put brains to a plan, carry out said plan, and make something out of absolutely nothing. That has VALUE. That inspires respect

I won’t go back thru the last pages of the thread but that episode was crack. A nice prequel and then seeing everything advance was a great way to end things. Crack has almost completely destroyed everything and just seeing Jerome’s facial expression, you see that there’s no turning back.

The whole family plugged up, no one died (yet) and the epidemic is in full swing. Can’t wait for season 4.

I love the nod to John in this episode. It was a true tribute.

I love the show but I stopped liking Franklin at the end of season 2 when he killed his best friend to protect a Cholo.

He didn't kill Kevin to protect a cholo, he killed Kevin because he was about to start a war they wouldn't have won.

fukk Kevin. Same dude that stole money from the crew, told the Mexicans how to cook crack, was about to start a war with the Mexicans because his cousin was doing shyt he was directly told not to do

The Telenova Romance bullshyt between Gustavo and Lucille and the invincible Super Cac Teddy Macdonald (who can apparently survive ANY situation with not so much as a prick on the finger)

I mean, white people came out the crack era with not so much as a prick on the finger. Series might end with Teddy as a Senator or some shyt while Franklin is in jail and Gustavo is buried somewhere in Mexico.
