I think he still ends up selling for the cia. I took this episode more as showing that certain people are just destined for certain things, no matter what reality they're living in. I like how they left it open for interpretation though.

I think your right, more importantly a "slave" to the CIA/system. I think the speech Cissy gives before he wakes up is important too,and what causes Franklin to come back to the game. In the alternate reality she's giving him a speech about staying and fighting at the school, using the system against itself,so he can get a good job and come back to help South Central. At the end of the show Franklin basically says whats done is already done and ain't no going back to B.C times(before crack). Ain't no going back to an alternate reality where he is a "slave" for the system at this point because he doesn't fear the consequences of the game. He has to "stay and fight" in this reality that he created. I think the Cissy speech really nailed it home and bought him back from the dead figuratively.

Also notice she said she had the same convo with his father, who's reality was much like Franklins alternate reality and real life reality. Pops tried to go along with the system by joining the military and doing "the right thing",felt betrayed, and fought against the system with the Panthers. Only to then feel betrayed by the downfall of the panthers. Basically feeling betrayed and giving up on doing either and becoming a bum, which led to his demise and the system killing him anyway. We see Franklin in the same predicament in his alternate reality, feeling betrayed after working hard and trying to do things the right way. We see Cissy give him the speech but its already too late,in reality he's been "betrayed" by the crack game and now has to make the same choice his father made. He can stay and fight,or be angry and bitter and let the system end up killing him anyway. Its poetic that his father is also the one there when he comes out of the ice bath.

I'm really mad. This episode is pissing me off.

This why The Wire will always be the GOAT. They never did that alternate universe, flashback weirdo shyt all these other shows do.

If the wire existed in today’s time, a ton of episodes and few seasons would’ve have got shytted on very hard. The comments during all of season 2 and the last season would’ve been insufferable.

Really? I didn't catch it. Break it down breh.

"Mitchell’s incarceration and death did not lead to the destruction of the heroin industry. Rather, both the level and scope of crime and the volume of drugs on the streets of Oakland and other East Bay communities increased heavily after his funeral. This became known as the “Felix Mitchell Paradox”. Without Mitchell maintaining control over the market, it quickly spun out of control and resulted in even greater growth and more violence."

Franklin spoke on the vacuum and void that it would create if he left the game, and how it would lead to greater destruction of the community. And we already see whats been happening without him according to Auntie, and the violence we saw at the end of this episode.

Franklin provides organized chaos. Like Avon only smarter.

Might have to do a separate thread

Even tho they’re an integral part gangs were mainly used for muscle

that's all gangs are...No matter the race or if they are on a motor cycle or even flying on a helicopter gangs are muscle to initiate violence on behalf of some type of currency rather that's narcotics, guns, or even oil...What's the point in having muscle if you can't flex it when needed.

I loved this episode but I'm kind of confused was it a prelude or just an alternate reality...Because we knew Franlin was a gifted student that's how he met the white dude with the mansion but I know he didn't meet Reed prior to based on their interactions.

In his alternate reality Franklin's father dies because he's still on the streets cause Franklin never moves out which gave his parents a chance to reconnect after he was beat by the police. In that world Andre and Franklin are still cool cause Franklin hasn't done anything to put them at odds. Franklin choosing to do what he did ultimately saved his father and Leon while dooming Wanda, Mel and Andre.

Did we see his pops in the alternate reality? This is great insight regardless.

Everything that happened before Franklin walked into his house with the cane was dream sequence.

This shyt was dope.

Was they saying that no matter what reality we go to certain people are doomed?

Blck people gonna have to struggle?

Why was the bikes hung up on poles when they went to Leon’s projects?

Why they kept focusing in on little red objects? Was that supposed to symbolize blood?

That white girl was kicking game and I loved it. Complete opposite of what a black man from the hood is used to but she led him to his demise or salvation? We will see. Does the white girl symbolize cocaine?

Leon looked a lot more hardcore with the braids.

I had forgotten how beautiful Mel was that quick. Salute to the makeup team on the show.

I wonder if they gonna introduce a crack funded record label before it’s all over? Would be dope to see an Eazy E type character pop up.

:ohhh:

He rebuffs her at first than comes around to her too to which she introduces him to Reed.

Might have to watch this episode again.

In “Other Lives,” we’re given a vision of Franklin pursuing the American Dream the way the averafe American is told too, by working hard to earn their spot in the grand meritocracy of the United States. But it’s all a dream, a fabrication. Not even an alternative timeline can give Franklin his freedom, because there are too many people above him invested in keeping him down.
