No, people just wanted to see Eddie do a skit on SNL because its the house he built. He could do no wrong if he did a skit, just like when he was on the show.
He didn't even have to do a full on skit though.

He would've killed the bit Jerry had doing q&a.

If he show up as James Brown for 15 seconds during that music bit people would've been satisfied

And the writing last night was pretty good, they weren't gonna have Eddie out there looking awful, no one was gonna complain about anything he did, he's only getting complaints now because the whole thing was awkward as fukk.

They hyped up his return, he talked about it, Chris Rock did this great intro, then he came out said thanks and gave the director the :dahell: for not cutting to commercial. They were prepared to let him do whatever he wanted and he wondered aloud why they were still rolling

This was an amazing show. I was expecting a couple more classic skits but at least we got Celebrity Jeopardy, Jon Lovitz dead, Generalissimo Francisco Franco dead, Opera man, and Wayne's World.

Eddie looked like he wanted to get out of there FAST.

That song about breaking character got me in tears :russ:

The only thing I didn't like was the Californians:scust: and are they trying to erase Cecily Strong from Weekend Update's history?

ASG got destroyed...

SNL beats out ASG in TV ratings

The NBA All-Star Game faced stiff competition for eyeballs on Sunday night, as the "Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special" drew huge television viewership numbers.

The special, which brought back some of the biggest names in the show's history, garnered a 14.2 household rating on NBC versus a 5.5 rating for the All-Star Game on TNT and TBS, according to the 56 markets monitored by Nielsen.

The rating for the SNL show translated into 23.1 million viewers from 8-11:30 p.m. ET. The program was shown on tape delay for the West Coast, which might have turned into a positive for the NBA.

Turner Sports didn't have viewership numbers as of noon ET Monday, but the overnight rating was still up 12 percent versus last year's broadcast, the network said.

This year's NBA All-Star Game overnights still beat out the metered ratings for seven of the previous 10 games.

It was a closer battle on Twitter, where 1.3 million tweets were sent out about the SNL special versus 1.1 million on the NBA All-Star Game, according to Nielsen Social.

The SNL show counts as NBC's most watched prime-time entertainment telecast, in total viewers, since May 13, 2004. That night "ER" had 23.9 million viewers on the night of the "Frasier" finale. That number excludes post-Super Bowl programs.

The West beat the East 163-158 in the highest-scoring NBA All-Star Game.

If Eddie would've done a 2 minute Mister Robinson's Neighborhood sketch, it would've brought down the house and the internet would've exploded. We'd all be spending today googling those old sketches and reminiscing about how funny that shyt was. Eddie didn't even need to say anything funny, he just needed to show up in the old apartment, stand there for 1 minute and 50 seconds and then climb out the window. No one expected the second coming of RAW, just show up in the funky sweater and let people have their nostalgic moment.

:what:at some of the Eddie disrespect in here. Cats like Rock and other comedic friends that he chills and shoots the shyt with say he's still hilarious just going off of the top even. I agree with cats saying he might feel like he cant do stand-up anymore since he's been away for so long, he's said that himself as a matter of fact.

As far as his recent movies the main problems there imo are script and the rating, he needs something where he could be unfiltered/himself.:manny:

It's clear Eddie just showed up to thank the audience and jet, Eddie not performing dampens the entire show. To not have the biggest star from your show do at least 1 skit is a fail imo, on top of that i think they did this show because they don't expect to make it to 50.

I think it's because in 10 years most of the older guys wouldn't be able to perform or make an appearance.

if he had done a skit, you already know ppl would have been like aw eddie wasnt funny, oh the skit sucked...blah blah...no matter if it was funny or not...i think he knew it too.
This, he would've had to of been sharp/no less than classic for a win. Expectation wise he had it tougher than anyone else last night.

nikkas gotta chill with saying the dude just came and left the scene or fled etc. He was there for the whole thing. It was probably more of a fan experience to him personally than anything. Just soaking it all in. Came out and gave his thanks and fled back to let the rest of the show commenced.

I agree with @jwinfield the writing they had for that night, would've never let him fall. Chevy Chase clearly couldn't perform, so they have Garrett A do his announcer bit, instead of hanging him out to dry. He could've donned the Buckwheat wig and said something about faking his death to get away from that show. Anything was better than the awkwardness. As for trending, are they referring to the homage or the awkwardness? This was a one night only, once in a lifetime event that we won't see again. I'm coppin this when it's released.

Oh, and it turns out that Chris Kattan was there, so I guess that means Dennis Miller, Al Franken (understandably), Vicotria Jackson and Rob Schneider were the only ones missing.
