Having played this game I owe Barret an apology. He is by far the best character in the main party and is the glue that holds it all together and makes it work. Literally every character in the party can play off him to make themselves more entertaining.

Surface level still a caricature even if he is the MVP.

I thought Barrett was really holding it down in this game. The "He's a caricature!" critiques of him far undersell his overall performance and makes what they(Avalanche) got going on far more interesting. His personality when contrasted with Yuffie or Aerith were hilarious at times. I would not care for a Black version of Cloud just shrugging things off and being nonchalant.

He is clearly the best actor among the voice actors in the cast. and they seemed to have made him more 3 dimensioal in this game, perhaps as a result of that realization. Last game he wore the sunglasses the whole time and just played the angry tough guy persona.
In this game he hardly ever wears the sunglasses so he is more expressive, and his emotions run a much larger gambit.

Basically Game 1 Barrett = Mr T
Game 2 Barrett = Johnathan Majors

Am i the only one who found the ending to this one hella disappointing?

The Remake ending was epic and bold. This one fell flat. Maybe because I was expecting a grand Empire Strikes Back sort of conclusion to get me jazzed for the third one but I felt it was overly complex and “mysterious” for its own good.

The scene everyone who played the original wanted to see (or maybe didn't want to happen) was butcherd. The ending from there was rather limp.

Yea it was DEFINITELY butchered. It felt like they didn’t know exactly what to do, be tragic or triumphant, so they went for a combination of both and it was just…confusing and weird.

Barrett is by far the most interesting/complex character. I've always resented the "you only like/relate to him because he's black..." No, his motivations all make sense, and you actually see his growth as the story progresses.

I am very OK with the storytelling of the ending, it leaves Cloud more broken than he was in the OG and sets up the REAL heart of the story which was always his life stream scenes.

I think it will actually correct a misstep that the OG took; which has us snowboarding like 10 minutes after Aerith dies. I think part III will open up dark as fukk and continue the Cloud degradation the way it should.

As for Aerith, IF it's really her life stream self trying to save Cloud.... that's in line with the OG and especially the movie - where we see both her and Zack actively trying to save Cloud during his depression.

I think they missed their mark with the gauntlet, that just went on too long and by the time you get to the third or fourth fight you forgot that Aerith just got stabbed up.

They should've just had one Jenova and ONE Sephiroth fight. The gang fights Jenova once and Cloud/Zack/Aerith fight Sephiroth once.
