Finished S3 tonight. Overall I like the show and have a lot of thoughts, but I have major problems with the writing/plotting. For the most part it's solid - it's an interesting story, even if a lot of the basic beats are things we've seen in other shows. There are interesting characters, etc. But I really dislike when you can see that a plot has been written into a ditch, and then the writers take a ridiculous u-turn out of it - or worse yet, do something straight up stupid. So many problems Marty and Wendy go through are played up for drama, only for the solution to be something ridiculous. Or a plot that seems to be fine/not super important will suddenly blow up, requiring a dramatically stupid resolution.
Two examples of a married couple going on a walk during a dispute over business issues, only for one person to end up dead - thus either extending a conflict or resolving a conflict. First the Snells, then the old couple who didn't want to sell the second casino. Then the entire thing with the therapist. You introduce a genius forensic accountant...but the Byrd family therapist simply disappears and nobody looks into it, which would result in tracking down a six figure payment, an exotic car purchase, etc? Nope, it just disappeared.
Every time they need to achieve something, they come up with some ludicrous plan to make it work that rarely seems earned. These short cuts, coincidences, and hard/fast resolutions make it impossible to compare this show to GREAT shows. It kinda reminds me of the worst parts of Breaking Bad, specifically the...plane crash from a certain season. Overall I thought S3 had a lot of great moments but also felt like Ben allowed the writers to really fall into a lot of poor plotting due to his mental illness. Why Marty didn't get rid of him sooner, I'll never know.
Ending was cool, although not that satisfying since Helen didn't get to "know" she lost. I'm gonna assume S4 is gonna feature the other cartel attacking while the Byrds are in Mexico, delaying their return to the US.
