Nas Turns 40, Says "It's One Of The Best Feelings I Ever Had"
by Jay Balfour

In an interview with Miss Info at his Hennessy-sponsored birthday bash, Nas also alludes to his long-standing maturity and says he's now at "a more relaxed place."
Nas’ widely lauded classic debut, Illmatic, is now an achievement a half a lifetime in the rear view as the Queensbridge rapper turns 40 years old today (September 14). Illmatic, which quickly characterized the best aspects of New York City Hip Hop for many fans and critics alike, was released in April of 1994 when Nas was only 20 years old. Nearly two decades later, the rapper, who first made his recording debut on Main Source’s “Live At The Barbeque” in 1991, took some time to reflect on his career and growth at a Hennessy-sponsored birthday party.
Speaking with Hot 97 radio personality Miss Info, Nas both shrugged off and praised the milestone. “I just take it all in stride,” he said. "It really feels like—man, I always grew up around older people. I always talked to older people. So, some of my friends turned 40 a couple of years ago, so they mess with me like I don’t know what it’s like. Now, it’s one of the best feelings I ever had. I’m just blessed. It’s a miracle. I’m so blessed.”
When asked whether or not his age has affected his perspective as an artist and lyricist, Nas first alluded to his maturity as a young rapper. “No I wouldn’t say [I’m] ‘more thoughtful,’" he said. "I think I was thoughtful back then when I was younger. The speed changes, when it comes to trying to get on and then once you’re on you have to adjust your life with it.”
He continued by explaining that occupying new spaces and adopting new identities is something that has led to some change. “When you adjust your life it means you got new things in your life happening," he said. "You move, you become a businessman, a father. That matters. That weighs in.”
Nas recently embarked on a new business relationship with the popular-within-Hip Hop brandy maker Hennessy. In a previous interview with Miss Info, the emcee spoke at length about the venture and his visiting the Cognac region of France where Hennessy is produced. Earlier this year, Nas also invested assets in the Brooklyn-based Mass Appeal Magazine. In years past, he has acted as an official spokesperson for the sneaker and apparel company Fila and has also more recently been a public partner of the annual and ever growing Rock The Bells festival.
While Nas’ first child was born just months after his debut, he has recently shared a more intimate portrayal of fatherhood with songs like 2012’s “Daughters,” a track that served as the third single for his eleventh album, Life Is Good. That song, which received two Grammy nominations, offered an honest look at his daughter Destiny Jones and his own positioning as a father.
When asked if his taste in culture has changed and developed with his age, Nas responded “a lot.” Still, he also referenced wanting to have nice things and dress older as a child. “But I was always this dude trying to be up in some fly silk and stuff like that,” he said. “I got pictures of myself at like 12 years old with cool silk shirts and all of that, it was just a natural thing.”
With regard to his skill as an emcee, Nas distinguished his older self as “more relaxed” but no less skillful. “As far as intensity of rhyme,” he said, “when you’re young and on fire, there’s nothing like that feeling. So, where I’m at now is just a more relaxed place, but you know, I think it’s still in me when I need to get crazy. I know it’s still here."
It has now been more than a year since the release of Life Is Good, an album that marked the end of his contract with Def Jam Recordings, where he was signed in 2006. On the Def Jam imprint alone, Nas has released albums 2006's Hip Hop Is Dead, Untitled and a collaborative album with Damian Marley in 2010. Prior to his signing with Def Jam, Nas released material on Columbia Records.

Earlier this year Nas announced that he was working on his twelfth studio album. When asked about the title in this recent interview, the rapper alluded to a release with little lead up. "I was ready at one point to announce the title," he said, "but too much was happening and I couldn't...my bad about that. I'm not saying nothing. It's just gonna drop."

Hip hop legend Nas kicked off his 40th birthday at Lavo with a dinner in the private dining room. Accompanied by friends including Michael Strahan and Nicole Murphy, who joined the group for dinner, they ordered the Kobe meatball, tuna tartare, New York steak and chicken parmigiano.

Soon afterward, Diddy surprised Nas by popping in to wish him a happy birthday; they all shared laughs and snapped photos. After dinner, Nas’ group headed to the Boom Box Room at Marquee Nightclub, where he was surprised with a huge presentation and three-tier cake branded with images of all of his albums. Nas enjoyed the club scene while sipping on Hennessy cocktails and smoking cigars.

Nas kicked off his 40th birthday celebrations on Thursday with a private dinner at Avenue hosted by Hennessy V.S. Mariah Carey was in attendance.

Hip Hop legend Nas kicked off his 40th birthday at TAO Beach on Saturday. Arriving with a group of friends, he enjoyed lunch while drinking Dom Perignon and Hennessey cocktails. He was surprised by friend and fellow hip hop artist Busta Rhymes who came to say happy birthday.

The two hung out in the cabana, laughing and singing along to the sounds of DJ Jerzy. Thrilled at the presentation, Nas was then treated to his second birthday cake of the weekend accompanied by a parade of large pool floats. He took photos with the treat adorned with a crown and Mets logo and was later seen tasting it with friends. “All Gold Everything” rapper Trinidad Jame$, who also spent his day at a VIP cabana poolside, later came over to say happy birthday. Nas’ group stayed until 5pm then left to get ready for the big fight.
Later that night, TAO continued Nas’ 40th birthday festivities with a post-fight party. Headlining the evening, Nas arrived in a Waraire Boswell designed gold and black suit and enjoyed dinner with friends in TAO Asian Bistro’s private dining room. The group then took over a VIP section in the center of the club where a custom graffiti wall of Nas’ name was displayed over the dance floor. Flashes filled the space and fans cheered as DJ Vice announced his arrival. Soon afterward, TAO put on a giant birthday presentation that featured a special showcase from professional b-boy dancers and a cake replica of the Queens Bridge. Later that night after some Hennessy and Dom Perignon drinks, Nas jumped on the mic and thanked everyone for coming, stating, “I’m 40″ while chuckling. He encouraged club goers to “live [their] life to the fullest, don’t stop and take it all the way.” DJ Vice then dropped a medley of his songs including “If I Ruled the World,” “Hate Me Now” and “The Don,” which he rapped along to.

Busta Rhymes, who dined at TAO Asian Bistro earlier that night, took over a VIP table next to Nas. Busta made sure to wish Nas a happy birthday and toast with the crowd to his career, professing his love and admiration for the legendary lyricist as well as dubbing him “King of New York.” He then got the entire room to scream “Happy Birthday Nas” before treating the packed room of hip hop fans to his verse from “Scenario” alongside Nas. Downing half of a bottle of Hennessey, Busta then rapped along to some of his hit songs before the royalty duo treated guests to a few tunes before getting back to partying. At 4 am, Busta got back on the mic and took the crowd through a catalogue of Nas’ greatest hits, schooling them on real hip hop.

Comedian Dave Chappelle was also spotted at TAO Nightclub. Chappelle first stopped in the restaurant to wish Nas a happy birthday before taking over a skybox in the nightclub where he also partied with the birthday boy and hopped in the DJ booth to greet the crowd. Trinidad Jame$ was seen partying at a table with friends as was former NFL star Marcus Stroud and actor Dash Mihok, who also had separate VIP tables that evening.

On Thursday evening, The Source Magazine was on the scene at Nas’ New York Birthday Celebration presented by Hennessy V.S at Avenue. Nas, who looked dapper in a pink blazer, was joined by Maino, Shawn Pecas, Mariah Carey, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Munn, DJ D-Nice, Destiny Jones, Joel Kinnaman, Jen Yu of Hennessy, his father legendary Jazz artist Olu Dara and Jungle, Legendary Damon Peruzzi, Melanie Fiona, Rodney Williams SVP of Hennessy, Pusha T, Tyson Beckford, Nas’s Manager Anthony Saleh, Sessilee Lopez, Mike Will Made It, Special Ed, Q-Tip, Windsor ‘Slow’ Lubin, Barry Weiss, Ross Michaels and Estelle, to name a few.

Guests were treated to signature Hennessy V.S mixed drinks and an unforgettable culinary experience from award-winning chef Mario Carbone. Hennessy presented a special gift to Nas of Hennessy Paradis Impérial and a custom luxury watch made by Hublot. Mariah Carey gave Nas a Louis Vuitton Cigar Humidor for his birthday. The seated dinner took place on the 2nd floor of the club where we spotted spotted Q-tip and Mariah chatting and laughing by the bar. Later in the evening, the crowd made their way downstairs for the after party. DJ M.O.S. was on the turntables. “I just think it’s a miracle to be alive and life is a gift and like my man Richard Pryor said, ‘Keep some sunshine on your face.’ That’s it,” Nas told The Source about being 40.

We also caught up with Q-Tip who spoke about when he first met Nas. “The first time we met was a pretty monumental love moment…I worked on the first album…He was just cool…he’s a vibesmith, so he looked for the right vibe…My man Large Professor told me about him, well I heard him on “Barbeque,” but then Large was like ‘yo. you got to hear his stuff.’ Played it for me and I was like ‘Man, you crazy!’”

Nas’ favorite drink is the “Hennessy V.S Big Apple,” which is made of Hennessy V.S, Apple, Maple Syrup, Lime and Cinnamon.

Anyone else feel like Life Is Good is over-rated? I see people saying this is one of his best albums ever, but I feel like I'd rank a bunch of his other albums ahead of this. I feel like it's missing the more "street" sound (especially in the beats) that I'm used to hearing from him.

I also feel like HHID is somewhat underrated. Money Over Bullshyt, You Can't Kill me, Carry On Tradition, Where Are They Now, Hip Hop is Dead, and Blunt Ashes are all great songs imo. Unfortunately most of the other songs are fairly average at best (I can certainly see someone throwing another one into a greater category though), although they're not bad by any means. That album started off strong, then kind of fades out towads the middle-end.
